Suspensions, hazing, lawsuits, etc.[edit]

@Xanthomelanoussprog, Yngvadottir, Drmies, GiantSnowman, and Doug Weller: While looking for sources for the article, I came across this article about half the members of the dance team being suspended. I also came across this AP article as well as this, this and this about a 2009 hazing incident involving the band. It appears the school temporarily suspended the entire band for a different incident in 2007, but lifted the suspension after a few days.[1][2] Then, there's this article about a former director of the band suing the school for being fired. I'm not purposely seeking out negative about the band, but these are some of the things popping up while I'm google for stuff. Wow, thanks, Marchjuly. After looking at the last of those, my thought remains that the firing shouldn't be mentioned unless we wind up with a list of directors of the band; I had seen that was the reason the current director returned in 2017. The hazing, on the other hand, I'm inclined to put in along the lines of: "Hazing incidents involving members of the band were reported in 2007 and 2009." That's a lot of coverage, and it wouldn't involve naming any names. I note that at least one of those stories says how many members the band has; that was a point in the earliest versions of the article that we've lost, and according to those early versions it's one of the largest marching bands in the historically black colleges, so I'd like to get that detail back. I found this and this on Google Books about Frederick D. Hall; they connect him to the school. There might also be more details on him and the band in this, but I can't access it. Hall might actually be suitable for a WP:RED since there might be more sources out there about him for at least stub to written. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:57, 27 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Also, found this Smithsonian (magazine) article which is pretty detailed about the band as of January 2017 and this Las Vegas Review-Journal article from September 2016 which might have just taken stuff from Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:07, 27 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The "Brief History and Chronology of the 'Sonic Boom'" is a bit vague on when the band started (states 1940s, but with the first and presumably part-time director Charles Saulsburg from 1947 to 1948). According to the Brief History the first full-time director, William W. Davis, left the army in 1946, did some unspecified jobs and then became the arranger (or an arranger) and trumpeter for Cab Calloway's band. It appears that Calloway's band folded circa 1948- so Davis presumably had a very short stint with them. Davis relinquished the post in the same year that the band was "dubbed" Sonic Boom. Official logo[edit]

If you check the band's YouTube channel, there seems to be some kind of official logo it is using at the beginning of its videos. A screenshot of this could probably be captured, but it would be better to find a png file of the logo somewhere online. It could be uploaded as at non-free logo and used in the main infobox. I've checked the band's other social media accounts, but can't find the a clean version of the logo being used on any of them. I found this and some Facebook photos like this, but nothing really usable. -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:17, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
