Sentence that could be clearer[edit]

Hello, I wasn't sure what this sentence meant: The late-1940s proved to be a difficult time for Clark as she stood up for the NAACP's aim of equalization to integration against many other members and activists. Could the part about the "aim of equalization to integration" be clarified maybe? Like does it mean that the NAACP strategy was to get pay equalization with the aim of eventually working towards integration? If so, why were many other members and activists against that?
