Regarding Deletion[edit]

I cannot believe there is an article about a guitar here. Is there some way of getting rid of this?

There is a page for deleting things. Can this be added? Preaky

Uh...the guitar has history behind it and it has been used by one of rock's most influential guitarists for decades. I think it deserves its own page. --Jasonn 05:31, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, this is an important guitar. I think I will add a list of manufacturers who have produced versions of this guitar, to go with the luthiers already mentioned. SnakeSeries 18:27, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I also agree. This guitar is perhaps the most well-known single guitar ever (single guitar, not model of guitar), and various copies have been produced by various people It's an image forever assoicated with Brain May, who is one of the most influential rock guitarists. --Burbster 13:00, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree as well, This and Lucille are probably the most influential guitars of our time, if you understand what I mean.Pubuman 02:25, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Not only do I agree (name another unique guitar that was hand-built by the musician who plays it, and has done so for nearly 40 years), I'm thinking the entry may need some tweaking. The restoration section might work better being placed before the replicas section as it would make more sense, time-wise. Also, I believe that Burns is no longer making copies of the guitar, but the same factory in Korea is making them under a different name. If no one disagrees, I will make the changes in a few days. Just surfed in. Can't believe someone seriously wanted to delete an article on the Red Special. Delete articles on Hear'Say by all means, but the Red Special? That is ignorance right there. Optimus Sledge 03:46, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Frst off why delete any articals? just don't read them! ans secondly this guitar deservs it's own page as the instrument itself! has changed rock history not just Brain May. the guitar is a legand and has earned its place in the world. There is nothing like this and never has been in history!

  • This guitar is an anomaly: a one-off, homebuilt guitar made by amateur luthiers that sounds like a dream come true. Doesn't happen very often. This article should stay, stay, three cheers for Brian May! 65.248.164.214 (talk) 19:56, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I stumbled across a random Queen video which reminded me someone tell me as a kid that Brian May made his own guitar from a trash can. I searched for Freddie Mercury then clicked on the Queen page and on to Brian May. So I'm happy to find a page here just about his guitar. It's very notable and should not be deleted.

Portals can be deleted here. What about users like Preaky?

References[edit]

Can someone please explain why thi article is tagged as having no references when references are clearly given at the bottom? Mschamis 15:21, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, and the references seem reliable too (Guitarist Magazine in primis). I'm going to remove the tag. In case of revert, please write here the reasons. --Beamrider 14:19, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Polish wikipedia Red Special article[edit]

The polish wikipedia article on Red Special has featured article status. Would it be possible for somebody who can read polish to use some of the information from that page on this one? --Mrtombullen 12:55, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Poland rules. I can read in Polish, because I live in Poland.

Effects of inverted Phase[edit]

Is there a citation to back up the description in this article about how the inverted phase effects the tone? I wasn't able to find it.Fireemblem555 (talk) 06:32, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree with the definition, because the effect on the frequency depends on which pickups are out of phase with eachother. Although it is true that Brian May often used a phase switch setting that emphasized high and mids, the statement that two pickups out of phase will create this tone is not true in many cases depending on how one sets things. This forum has an answer that reinforced what I already thought. http://www.jemsite.com/forums/f35/phase-switch-71274.htmlFireemblem555 (talk) 06:35, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I changed it, the statement that the phase switch lessens bass frequencies is not universally true depending on which pickups are used. I think Brian May used a treble booster to boost his high frequencies, its on this one website about achieving the Brian May sound.Fireemblem555 (talk) 06:39, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rustins[edit]

what's 'Rustin'? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.190.80.124 (talk) 10:55, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Rustins is a company founded in London in 1924. It produces wood care and specialty paints.
The company web site is here: http://www.rustins.eu/web/default.asp.
There's a data sheet for Rustins Plastic Coating here: http://www.rustins.eu/ProdData/Plastic%20Coating%20data%20mar10.pdf.
I am not sure that it is still made to the same formula as it was in 1963, but there's no indication otherwise.
Something could be added to the article itself. Anybody? Twistlethrop (talk) 10:58, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unusual features section[edit]

The unusual features section needs to be sourced. Not only that, but some of the items under there are just weird. For example, under tone:

"[The tone of the guitar] is near-impossible to describe, but is so singular that it is easily-identified."

That's not really encyclopedic material. I'm taking that whole bullet point out - please add it back in if you can come up with some sources that at least show that the guitar has a reputation for having very singular tone (whatever that means...).

Great article, other than that!--72.130.19.46 (talk) 16:06, 23 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Special[edit]

"Unlike the primary instruments of most musicians, the original Red Special was built by May along with his father"

Yeah, I bet the majority of musicians didn't get their main instruments built by this duo - if that was it the two would have been in heavy demand indeed. Self-evident. ;) I can see what is intended here of course but it's a poorly worded sentence at a key point in the article. 83.254.154.164 (talk) 09:43, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"delay capabilitities"[edit]

In the Restoration section the "delay capabilitities" of the guitar are mentioned, with a link to a dead ref. Surely delay is not a quality of a guitar but of an external unit. Perhaps something else, such as sustain, is intended? Mutt Lunker (talk) 15:13, 11 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Setup Specs[edit]

Couldn’t help but notice there are no specs for action, relief, pickup and pole piece height, etc. Might be helpful for people trying to set up their replicas. Not sure where to find accurate measurements. 2601:281:CC01:5710:F947:F3EE:D873:414C (talk) 21:55, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

mother-of-pearl star inlay[edit]

The "mother-of-pearl star inlay" bears some resemblance to religious symbols. It has now been exchanged for another. Does anyone know the story about this? 2003:D3:DF03:A800:B8D9:3D76:6BF8:2494 (talk) 19:58, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Out-of-phase switches[edit]

2 of them would be enough. But is has 3. Why? 2003:D3:DF03:A800:B8D9:3D76:6BF8:2494 (talk) 20:17, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
