Fan Translation[edit]

I am not sure if it should be mentioned on the page. There has been no news on the translation - and at this point it is a piece of trivia that seems less and less relevant. Not that I don't believe it will be ever be finished (my bet is on never, though), but when will it cease to be relevant? If in ten years, there is still no translation, should it still be on the page? I believe it does not belong to an "wikipedic" article anymore - since the translation is not done, it is only relevant if it is news. As such, the project seems to have stalled, so I don't see why it should stay on the page. I am not trying to "punish" the project team for not finishing up, but I just don't see what it has to do on the page anymore. Willing to discuss, though - I am not trying to flame.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.119.232.226 (talk) 23:21, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'm obviously biased, so I won't touch the article, but I will say that the project is now actually moving again at full steam. If you'd like to delete, you can, but you'd probably just have to put it back when it's finished. In all honesty, a lot's changed in the past couple of months and we're now showing regular progress. Up to you, really. I think it is noteworthy because anyone looking for info on Policenauts will immediately wonder if there was ever a fan translation, regardless. The fan translation is definitely well-received in the gaming community -- it led to this detailed (and balanced!) review by SuperBunnyHop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya8hyJnJzBU 142.229.97.120 (talk) 18:56, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Press release?[edit]

Where is this Policenauts press release? It's not on this archived page of Konami press releases for 1996: http://web.archive.org/web/19970107225414/www.konami.com/press.htm . Anybody want to verify that?

It's here: http://web.archive.org/web/19970108025518/www.konami.com/pr-e7.htm For some reason there's no direct link to it! Weird.

Unit FOX-HOUND[edit]

Is this FOX-HOUND the same as the Metal Gear Solid's? Or it's just the same name? It really looks like her MGS backbone. 200.230.213.152 02:37, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is technically the same unit, but the two games aren't directly connected. It's just one of Kojima's little references that he likes to include in his games. He used Meryl in MGS because he liked her character in Policenauts so much.

I'm not sure he realized just how huge Metal Gear would get with the release of the Playstation games. Back in 1994, Metal Gear was a classic, but by no means a universally-known game series. --Chr.K. (talk) 10:50, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Kojima was already writing MGS when he made Policenauts. The game makes reference to FOXHOUND being disbanded due to their Gene Therapy after the fall of Zanzibar.Jonny2x4 (talk) 02:33, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:MIDI Policenauts.jpg[edit]

Image:MIDI Policenauts.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

MGS4 Cameo[edit]

As you know Meryl is leading Fox-Hound in MGS4. Her team though has two members who have the same names as her team in Policenauts (Ed and Johnathon) with the unknown man speculated to be Dave. Anyone want to put this in as a cameo or leave it for the MGS4 article? --Shaoken 02:05, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

File:Pc98pnauts.png Nominated for speedy Deletion[edit]

An image used in this article, File:Pc98pnauts.png, has been nominated for speedy deletion for the following reason: Wikipedia files with no non-free use rationale as of 16 November 2011

What should I do?

Don't panic; you should have time to contest the deletion (although please review deletion guidelines before doing so). The best way to contest this form of deletion is by posting on the image talk page.

  • If the image is non-free then you may need to provide a fair use rationale
  • If the image isn't freely licensed and there is no fair use rationale, then it cannot be uploaded or used.
  • If the image has already been deleted you may want to try Deletion Review

Question for Hari[edit]

@Harizotoh9: What is the Super GamePower score out of? 4.2 out of what? TarkusABtalk 06:31, 1 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@TarkusAB:I can clarify that, since I've added scores from the magazine into some articles. It's X number out of 5.0. Roberth Martinez (talk) 18:06, 1 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, they're all out of 5. Their writing level is kind of young teenager-y and their reviews are really superficial. They just give an overview of the plot/gameplay, and then half a page or more of images and "tips". They're good for overviews and not so much the game. That same mag also has a "finals" section, and in one they spend a page describing the ending of Policenauts. I also added Ultima Generaction, which is a proper 2 page review of the 3D0 Version, and some Famitsu webpage reviews. The Ultima Generacion review should be placed on par with the GameFan review, and the English language previews should be removed. Reception should just be for actual reviews, not previews.

A note about Famitsu is that they're constantly updating their database, so they will eventually add reviews for the 3DO version, so periodically check those pages. They're also moving towards a new database system where instead of merely quoting their old reviews, they fully post them. An example is the PS version of Front Mission.

Also, Gameside put out a 2-3 part series on Adventure games called Adventure Gameside. Might be worth to invest in. It's all Japanese. Likely would cover this game, Snatcher, and maybe Clock Tower. Also, the Japanese Wikipedia cites several Guidebooks. The text from the JP wikipedia can be translated and moved over here, and you can just add a notice on the talk page. Right, I'm back, here's some bits I caught.

  • In the lead, what do you mean by "wider re-releases". More regions? Greater distribution? Expanded content? It's not that clear.

  • Shouldn't the term "Japan bashing" be in quotes? It doesn't sound very encyclopedic.

  • "The version comes packaged in a slipcase containing the game case itself and a hardbound art book.[4][3]" - Rearrange refs to be in numerical order.
 Done -- Roberth Martinez (talk) 13:33, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • "An official English translation of Policenauts was announced for release on the Sega Saturn in 1996 in North America.[22][3][23][24]" - Same as above.
 Done -- Roberth Martinez (talk) 13:33, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • "GameFan reviewed the PlayStation and Saturn ports.[15][3] " - Same as above.

  • The whole retrospective section needs rewriting to contain fewer direct quotes. One nearly every sentence is too much. Also possibly a little rewrite for conciseness would be good, since at the moment it feels very long-winded.
  • Please link 1Up.com in its first appearance.
 Done -- Roberth Martinez (talk) 13:35, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Now for the refs.

  • General thing with the references, but the publisher/websites need linking. Not essential, but preferred if possible.
 Done -- Roberth Martinez (talk) 18:05, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ref 1 needs switching to dead url, 1Up.com no longer active.
 Done -- Roberth Martinez (talk) 17:30, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ref 7 is a dead/moribund website, and needs to be marked as a dead URL just as a precaution. Also, no access-date.
 Done -- Roberth Martinez (talk) 17:30, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ref 8 just uses a bare URL for the website/publisher, which is Konami. Please correct this.
 Done -- Roberth Martinez (talk) 17:30, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ref 12 is Suruga-ya, a web store, which I don't believe is long-term reliable. This Famitsu article also has the date, and I'd trust that as a source more than Suruga-ya.
 Done -- Roberth Martinez (talk) 17:36, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ref 33 needs an alternate source, or properly archiving, as the older review pages on Famitsu have broken text. It's only used for the score, so it's less of an issue. SegaRetro includes scans, if it helps magazine issue and such holding the review for the SS version.
Done -- I managed to find which issue has the review for the Sega Saturn version but i couldn't find the issue online. Roberth Martinez (talk) 17:50, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@PatTheMoron: That's what I saw on my runthrough. Most of the issues are in the references. I'll put it on hold for now. --ProtoDrake (talk) 09:54, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@ProtoDrake: I did almost most of the corrections except the reception section, which i'll leave to @PatTheMoron: or someone else to change it. Roberth Martinez (talk) 18:08, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Shooterwalker:Hey! any advice as to what can you see that needs to be changed or removed from the article's retrospective section in order to finally get this at the GA level? Roberth Martinez (talk) 20:56, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TarkusAB:Sorry for bothering you but since you're the one who did most of the work and i'm trying to get this to a GA status (seeing that PatTheMoron is busy with other stuff here in Wikipedia), what can you see that needs to be changed or removed from the article's retrospective section in order to finally get this at the GA level? Any recommendations? Roberth Martinez (talk) 23:27, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There's no rush. Let's give Pat a week or so to respond. After all, they did not consult with me before nominating the article, so I presume they intend to do any necessary improvements themselves. TarkusABtalk/contrib 05:02, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @TarkusAB: and @ProtoDrake:! Sorry for being out of touch for a while, but thank you so much for what you've done here. I've made some grammatical changes and reductions to the reception section - is that what you were thinking would improve it? PatTheMoron (talk) 13:55, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@PatTheMoron:What ProtoDrake means is that the retrospective section in the reception area of the article needs rewriting to contain fewer direct quotes. That's all what's needed to get this nomination done. Roberth Martinez (talk) 16:28, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@KGRAMR:, I've done some more pruning, but if you think anything else could be cut or shortened I'm happy to make the changes. PatTheMoron (talk) 04:33, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@PatTheMoron:Looks good! @ProtoDrake: The retrospective reception section was now reworked by Pat. What do you think? Roberth Martinez (talk) 06:09, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@PatTheMoron: The article looks good now. I think I can give this a Pass. --ProtoDrake (talk) 09:46, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Among the best science fiction in gaming"[edit]

There is no source that can attribute this quote directly and should, and will be, edited out until it is either found, or changed to better reflect what the author/editor agrees is suitable.Belregard (talk) 06:54, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Belregard:. First, I just want to let you know I moved your talk page message from Talk:Policenauts/GA1 to Talk:Policenauts. You accidentally added your comment to that subpage, which is a problem because users watching the page will not get notifications and will have difficulty finding and responding to your message.
Next I want to address your concern with the passage "Both have been called some of the best science fiction works in games". The sources cited state the following:
  • "The science fiction, in particular, is some of the medium's strongest."[1]
  • "Arguably two of the biggest cyberpunk/sci-fi games to ever grace consoles..."[2]
I can understand your concern with the phrase, and especially how it's then added to the lead, which is supposed to only summarizes the key parts of the article. I agree to remove from the lead, and I am proposing rewording the sentence in Legacy to:
  • In 2009, IGN called them "arguably two of the biggest cyberpunk/sci-fi games to ever grace consoles", and Eurogamer described Policenauts' sci-fi elements as "some of the medium's strongest."
This leaves no room for interpretation. What do you think? TarkusABtalk/contrib 18:20, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
"The science fiction, in particular, is some of the medium's strongest" - "Arguably two of the biggest cyberpunk/sci-fi games to ever grace consoles" - First off, you are combining two separate quotes that say two separate things to infer something that is wholly different. Secondly, quoting 2 reviewers is not enough of a consensus to include it in the lede, it should be included in the "Reception" section under the retrospective analysis. The original quote I have a problem with is inferring itself to be "among the best video games ever made", when all games with that connotation have a direct reference to back it up, from said list of "Best games of all times" list on wikipedia, which has its own criteria for listing a game as such, and requires around 8 references for being called such. If the inclusion of those specific quotes, in their purity, are included, I have no problem, but inferring that it is "one of the best science fiction games in the medium", and including it directly in the lede, when it already states that the game has been critically acclaimed for its writing, smells too much of a biased induction.Belregard (talk) 18:35, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Belregard: Did you read my message in full? I already agreed to remove the lead sentence. Since you have no problem with those specific quotes, I will add them to the article. TarkusABtalk/contrib 23:06, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was simply further explaining my argument to be more specific, not arguing with you. The last sentence of my post is agreeing with the principle of removing it and stating them verbatim in the Reception section. Sorry if there was a miscommunication. Adventure Corner Review[edit]

"I looked into it and the staff don't provide any credentials" - Adventure Corner allows you to contact all members of the website for questions, and under German Data Protection and Privacy laws are not required to dispense personal information online.

"they have no published editorial policy" - Their imprint section lays out their liability for all content posted and all links supplied.

"they give no financial compensation, and the article was written by a freelancer" - Freelancers are employed by the company free of commission, but employed none-the-less and the writer of the review piece for Snatcher was written by Hendrik Busse, who is listed as an editor on the site, as a "Former Employee" on their "The Team" page.

If this is still inadequate then I withdraw my disputation.Belregard (talk) 16:14, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The liability policy is regarding legal matters with content transmission and says nothing about the editing of content. And privacy laws or not, a reputable website in any country would typically provide writer credentials to establish reliability. I'm not seeing anything that gives confidence the content is written or edited for accuracy by anyone with professional experience in the industry. I don't think we can let it slide as an WP:RS. If you disagree with me you can ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games/Sources. TarkusABtalk/contrib 17:55, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
