Financial Performance Update[edit]
I guess someone should do an update on their financial performance in the last 14 months. PayPal down 70% and Vimeo down over 90%. They need to give us the story behind all of these loses. After these levels of performance failure then they announce they are going to fine their customers $2500 for spreading whatever they claim to be 'misinformation' I guess they want to drive their stock losses to 100%? I would expect them to announce that their stockholders have fired their CEO and their Board of Directors for failure of fiduciary duties, but I won't hold my breath. Why are Elon Musk and X founders not considered founders of PayPal?[edit]
X.com was the surviving entity of the Confinity merger, so why would they not be included? Shrel23 (talk) 06:20, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- They keep being added and taken away over time by different editors. I believe the counter argument is that Confinity existed before Elon was involved so it is argued he is not a founder. DashDashUnderscore (talk) 08:00, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- Isn't that the case with all mergers?
- I think the name change to a service which already existed is what's throwing people off, but the underlying company is still X.com. PayPal IPO documents also state that Elon Musk was CEO of "PayPal" for a few months even though the name change wasn't yet offical during that period.
- Anyone else have any thoughts?
Shrel23 (talk) 17:46, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- I think people get caught up with the merger too much, the merger doesn't necessarily mean he did or did not help found PayPal.
- The company was rebranded to PayPal in 2001, Elon was fired as CEO in 2000.[1] It makes it pretty dubious that he founded it when he didn't work there when PayPal became PayPal. DashDashUnderscore (talk) 07:15, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
- When the company was renamed or when Musk was ousted as CEO has zero bearing on whether he founded the company. The company was founded by the merger of Musk's company with Confinity. That makes him a founder. Rebranding doesn't retroactively remove founders based on who's the CEO or not. 31.209.218.192 (talk) 14:38, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, I agree. The other founders of X.com should probably be added as well, or would that be too cluttered? Like I said in my other comment, even if rebranding was a factor, the IPO documents identify Musk as the first CEO of "PayPal". If the company itself identifies him in this way over a year after he was removed, there shouldn't be any doubts about his initial involvement. It should be fine to use as a source as well since it's a statement of facts filed with a government agency. No special knowledge or expertise is needed to interpret it.
