How do they make money?

It doesn't seem clear to me from the page, and it is a rather important question which should be answered on a wikipedia page about a company! All that I could tell is they get their money from Opera Mobile? Everything else seems to be free. Doesn't seem quite right that is their only source of income, or is it actually so? The same way Mozilla corp makes money - by letting companies bid against each other for product placement in the browser. The fact that there's an Amazon search bar in the initial settings is no accident. Opera also does a lot of licensing to non-computer applications, like the Kocom wall mounts, or hotel peripherals, etc. And then there's $12 million settlement against Microsoft. This should maybe be mentioned explicitly in the article, I too was wondering how exactly they made their revenue whether services or through ad deals. If no one else wants to add something I'll give it a go within the week IRWolfie- (talk) 19:42, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Keeping up with the figures

There are some facts about the subject (mainly users, financials etc) that are a bit outdated. Added {{coatrack}} tag, while various issues signalled at User talk:Fayenatic london#CFD results: Opera Software apparently aren't getting sorted. The article is about Opera Software, making it about Otello Corporation is a WP:COATRACK issue. Afaik "Opera Software ASA" never existed: "Opera Software AS" exists, but was apparently never acquired by the Otello Corporation. "Opera ASA" apparently was, but that is (currently) apparently unrelated to "Opera Software", the topic of this article. Prior connections between "Opera ASA" and "Opera Software" can be elucidated in the article, but the holding having acquired "Opera ASA" has nothing to do with "Opera Software", so should not dominate this article. --Francis Schonken (talk) 10:31, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

Split needed

The Norwegian Wikipedia currently has two articles for Otello and for Opera Software AS, see https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opera_Software .

Otellocorp.com states that Otello is a listed holding company with mobile advertising, apps & games including AdColony, Bemobi and Skyfire. Assuming it's notable, it needs a separate article in English Wikipedia. If notability is unclear, it needs a separate section in this Opera article. – Fayenatic London 07:17, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

Hindenburg Research paragraph should be removed or edited

Hindenburg Research is an private investment company that specializes in shorting company stock. Hindenburg Research has an financial incentive to defame companies in order to make themselves money. I believe this is a valid point. It appears the Hindenburg report is the only evidence for this section, which you pointed out, is problematic. The other source used is the TechCrunch article which states, "TechCrunch asked Hindenburg’s Nate Anderson if the firm had contacted local regulators related to its allegations. “We reached out to the Kenyan DCI three times before publication and have not heard back,” he said."
It appears there are no other reputable sources that verify the claims in this report. The other source, Android Police also states, "it's difficult to independently verify the financial claims by Hindenburg Research." I believe this section should be deleted based on WP:CORG StumptownPDX (talk) 16:24, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

@Johnuniq: Thank you for your attention to this. Dating back to 13 February 2020, there have been a series of disruptive edits and edit wars. The disruptive edits have involved section blanking, unfounded reverts or poorly sourced revisions by redlinked or IP users targeting the Controversy section to discredit the company, neglecting to give due weight to the company’s response. Any good faith attempt to adhere to WP:NPOV and WP:RS for this section has been undone almost immediately. Following this series of activity, the page was tagged, citing vandalism, in January 2021, and I reported a user for vandalism as of 31 January 2022, after my edits were reverted multiple times and the editor refused to respond to my talk page messages. This relates to my comment at this WP:RFPP permalink request for semi-protection. I semi-protected the article for one month (it had not been protected before). I see that the disagreements are at least a year old and need to be discussed on this page rather than with a slow edit war. About a suspicious edit I reverted...

Is there a way to see if other registered users with similar names (for instance, 2 word names) made similar edits to similar pages with a similar timeframe? I'm at least mildly suspicious about the removal I reverted on this page the other day. It seems like the sort of removal that could be in a Chinese PR campaign, and I think it happened while the semi-protection discussed earlier this month was not active. Please let me know if I'm worrying over nothing, I'd love to go back to just doing WikiGnome things... but my Infosec awareness is getting the better of me here.--Macks2008 (talk) 20:06, 26 February 2022 (UTC)

Cayman island tax info

Opera Limited does not offer any products, nor does Opera Limited generate income, so this is a null point. Being a Norwegian company, they pay taxes in Norway. I don't believe this is not the place for this information. Anyone else have any reason to keep this on the page? StumptownPDX (talk) 21:27, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
