Mana's age[edit]

I removed a bit about Mana's supposed age. It read: " (although, many fans believe him to be somewhere between him late thirties to mid-forties)". That seems a bit on the high side; if he' 40 today, that would have made him 25 in Girl'e, 26 in Matenrou, and 28 when he founded Malice Mizer. That seems rather unlikely. So, I removed it. flowersofnight 00:35, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I heard Girl'e was his High School band.

The March 19th claims his birth year is 1969, and the main article claims he is 33. Any verifiability in this? Calicore 14:18, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • No, as of now his birth year and age are still unknown. Someone should remove it from the March 19 article; I"ll do it later if no one else gets around to it. flowersofnight (talk) 19:11, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mana's real name[edit]

The wikipedia article for Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance claims our beloved Mana is credited as "Soshiro Hokkai" for writing the videogame's music. I have played this game, and was quite taken when I realized why I must love the music so much.

  • Mana did not write the music for that game. He only wrote a cell phone ringtone, "La nuit blanche", to promote the game; this ringtone was only released in Japan. Mana's real name is still unknown. flowersofnight 18:17, 27 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mana's age again[edit]

I just reverted another change of someone saying that Mana is commonly figured to be between 35 and 45 years of age. As in my comment above, this is unlikely. More importantly, it is unsourced speculation that does not belong on Wikipedia. flowersofnight 23:42, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • I agree, it's pure speculation. And he looks far younger than 35-45. Calicore 03:44, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No way. Generously speaking, here, I'd say no more than 35. And that's being very generous. ...phew... --; Sabi saotome 15:26, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Due to the excessive debate regarding Mana-sama's age I agree that it is unlikely for him to exceed forty (40) years of age, and is most likely in his mid-thirties; despite the alleged dissimilarities of physical appearances based upon age among varying ethnicities; and fueled by a compelling irritation of sorts to uncover the truth and reveal forbidden curiosities, I performed compulsive tedious sieves of countless websites(ex. Monologue Theater, Midi:Nette), online sources (ex. IPDL), Mon+amour International Fan Club exclusive magazine issuings, Japanese Magazines (ex. KERA, Myojo, Gothic and Lolita Bible), and even JRock/Pop television shows (ex. Hot Wave) to name only a few, and due to an even more naive frustration resulting from insufficient resources in the United States, most likely a cause of exaggerated nationalism promoted by denizens who couldn't even accurately provide a definition for the word. Therefore, I used only what works, appeared genuinely consistent and credible with supporting evidence and in-depth details; and I obtained it anywhere it could be found. There is also bantering controversy over whether or not Mana-sama was in High-School at the time of Girl'e's conception in 1989, that was unfortunately shortlived and disbanded in 1990. At approximately this time, from the data and research I have conducted, extracted, and compiled in a nice paragraph form package to help rid the horrifyingly inaccurate and idiotic proposals of taking a stab in the dark to 'guesstimate' Mana-sama's age based on little or no research from disreputable sources and have quested for over an Earth's cycle around the sun to now state my hypothesis regarding Mana-sama's age and other relative information regarding his initial band technically. So, without further delay, I may happily provide my input regarding the issue of Mana's age and hypothesize that Mana was most likely fresh out of High-School during Girl'e's conception; and I predict with much supporting evidence lingering throughout the interweb (tears) that between 1989 and 1990 Mana was approximately nineteen (19) years of age. Also, following Mana-sama's completion of High-School it is well know that he attended a college to study music in his home town of Hiroshima for two years. It appears more practical--as Mana-sama has reported in the Mon+Amour fan issuing that he was already sensitive by High-School--that he would have: a.) had the free time to start up a band in college, b.) had direct access through the music programs to peers with similar interests to produce the band, c.) had possibly been too busy or shy in High-School to compose a band and share his beautiful visions his peers may not ever comprehend. If Mana had been nineteen (19) at the time of Girl'e's conception in 1989: he would have been out of High-School and attending college and would just finish his two years studying music there in time to form the band Malice Mizer in 1992 with the other member being Közi. This timeline would provide adequate evidence for the now finely tuned and well-rehearsed Mana--at the peak (at the time) of his musical knowledge--to confidently and successfully form a highly successful band who shared similar interests with Mana and pans out logically and punctually concerning the formation of Malice Mizer in 1992 in which Mana would have most likely been twenty-one (21) or twenty-two (22) years of age. If this current ideology would be correct Mana-sama's true birth date would be 1970, or 1971; making him, according to my extensive research approximately thirty-seven (37) to thirty-eight (38) years of age; approximately in his mid-thirties.

Mana's real name again[edit]

Once again the HoD page insists that Mana is responsible for the game's music.Calicore 03:48, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oy vey. I reverted it to my old version and made a note on the talk page. Want to keep an eye on it as well? flowersofnight 04:24, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Moi-même-Moitié[edit]

With the correct spelling of Mana's superior and elegent clothing line, Moi-même-Moitié; it literally translates to "Me even Half" in French. "Myself Half" is incorrect and Mana's clever interpretation for his superior designer clothing line is quite logical as he models for both male and female styles; if you were to use the correct accents on the first and last e's within the name then it is quite sensical and clever as Mana models for both Elegant Gothic Lolita and Elegant Gothic Aristocrat fashions and is successful in accurately portraying both of the fashions with a perfectionist's precision (hence Me even Half of both gender) and is also indicitive of his cross-dressing tendencies most likely due to some sort of fetishistic transvesticism.

17 June 2007 (UTC) MoimemeMoitie

  • While I don't disagree with your reasoning, I'm not quite sure Mana is a master of the French language. Moi dix Mois, for example. Is that a correct French word structure or phrase? I've never seen anything like that in my few years of French. Moi-même is myself, but it's ambiguous because the -Moitié at the end could mean it's Me-even-half or Myself-half. That crafty Mana. --Piroteknix 23:13, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's typical of the Japanese to string together English words without regard to sentence structure when naming product lines and stuff (eg: Elegant Gothic Lolita Vampire Aristocrat). Moi-meme-Moitie and Moi dix Mois are the same, except with French. He just strings together words that are related to what they're naming.

And any allegations of "fetishistic transvesticism" are completely unfounded. Berserk798 21:42, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Redirected Midi:Nette here[edit]

I don't think a page on Midi:Nette could have any information that's not already mentioned here; it's essentially Mana's private label. So I redirected it here. Besides, some of the info on that page was just flat-out wrong, like Kagrra being on M:N. o_O flowersofnight 23:43, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Kagrra,'s album "Fuunroku" was published by M:N. [1] Notice the label.Calicore 03:36, 21 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
    • last.fm isn't an official site, and that "cover" looks like a purikura snapshot. A lot of the info on last.fm is comically wrong - try searching for all Malice Mizer albums and see what comes up. I did a little research and Kagrra has only been on the Key Party, PS Company, and Columbia record labels. Besides, Kagrra is not listed on the official Midi:Nette homepage [2] and never was. Another way to tell is by the catalog number of the releases. Each label has its own. Midi:Nette's prefixes are MMCD or M:N for CDs, MMVC for VHS, and MMBV or MMDV for DVDs - for example, "Gardenia" has catalog number MMCD-019. None of Kagrra's releases have an Midi:Nette catalog number. flowersofnight 05:27, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mana's real name, Part XVIII[edit]

I reverted a change claiming that Mana's name is "Satou Manabu". There is no official or unofficial source claiming this as his name; it is merely a persistent rumor in the fanbase. flowersofnight (talk) 00:56, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ha, I've heard the same thing supposedly being Gackt. Stupid rumors. --Alcy 01:03, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Although I haven't edited this posting, I am a big Mana fan. As others above have dicussed, there's no official reference to his name. Therefore, I removed it from the article (which looks like for the umpteenth time). --Mobius Man 06:46, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Swedish Mana article is actutally titled Manabu Satou, can anyone with Swedish language skills fix this? I didn't add it to the interwiki list for obvious reasons. Calicore 14:11, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the Swedish article commenting upon Mana I have found a website that translates it roughly but it appears as if possibly the article's chief editor may have made a grave mistake in inadvertently releasing Mana's officially registered name in Japan within the article; the website to translate is http://www.tranexp.com/. The original Swedish context and English translation tranexp.com provided for the Swedish article on Wikipedia regarding Mana is:

Regarding the swedish page about Mana-sama, I changed it. I'm swedish and took away his "real" name as fans claim it. I could change some more for you if you want me to.

Mana not a drag queen[edit]

I removed the "drag queen" category from this page. I asked an authority on the subject and this explanation sums it up pretty well:

A drag queen is a (usually) gay male who wears women's clothes for the sake of performing/hosting. They are not transgendered or trying to be real women though; in fact, a man who does not define himself as male cannot become a drag queen. This is because, rather than trying to be a convincing woman, as mana does, drag queens attempt to "cross over" womanhood and become something alien, grotesque, and comical. As one man put it, "You ever see real woman with lipliner up to her nostrils running around in a bikini?!" That aside, Mana doesn't consider himself a drag queen. Nuf said.

Also I removed the "Japanese musical groups" category since Mana himself is not a group.

flowersofnight (talk) 17:02, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So, Mana would be consitered trangender then? Calicore 17:18, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"Transgender" is a vague enough term that it's almost meaningless (see the Transgender article). I think we don't need to put a specific label on it. Mana's just a regular man who happens to wear female-style clothing some of the time. I'm going to remove the "transgender" category from the article as well. He's never given any indication that he considers himself anything other than simply a man. flowersofnight (talk) 20:07, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Mana is not transgendered or a drag queen. Mana-sama does not believe that clothing or personal appearance should be indicative of gender or sexual predilection. A man wearing a dress is no more telling of their romantic attachments or gender identity than a woman wearing slacks is. Very Old School Goth (talk) 04:28, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

femininity and crossdressing...[edit]

Should the article really say that he's reknowned for that? He doesn't crossdress anymore unless he's modelling clothes for Moi-Même-Moitié. --Berserk798 21:46, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think it should, since many people were introduced to and (for lack of a better word) acttracted to his appearence when he was crossdressing. I acknowledged his change in style in the article, but it can be worded better (without parentheses). Calicore 19:34, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Almost every picture I have seen of Mana has shown him in female clothing. I changed the phrasing to "at times, feminine". Unless you can provide us with a bevy of photos of him in male clothing (which would have to overcome the overwhelming amount of him in female clothing), then the article is more correct this way. I love the way editing takes place without any sources based on information from people who clearly don't follow Mana...Berserk could have educated him/herself by looking here: http://www.scape.sc/gallery.php?artist=3, or any other site with galleries of Mana.Sophia Demiurge 00:28, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Speaking as the proprietor of the site you linked, we mostly have Mana's feminine clothing in that section because the Mana section is intended to focus more on his personal activities such as Gothic & Lolita Bible appearances. Apart from those appearances, he's really cut back on the cross-dressing in recent years. If you have a look at, say, the cover of his new single "Lamentful Miss", it's quite a masculine look he sports there. Also, Internet coverage is slanted fairly heavily toward Mana's more feminine days in Malice Mizer. Moi dix Mois doesn't have nearly as much media coverage as Malice Mizer did back in the day - there are simply fewer images out there. flowersofnight (talk) 03:05, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Its a man baby!!!![edit]

HE/she looks like a woman but you say she /he is a man.....

  • Mana has never said anything about being a woman. He's always identified as a male despite the frilly dresses and feminine appearance. Looks can be decieving: see, androgyny. Calicore 06:01, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Generally, Westerners are the only ones who think he looks feminine - no Japanese people ever mistake Mana for a female. There are a few females in the visual kei scene who wear heavy makeup like Mana, and the resulting look is quite different. flowersofnight (talk) 16:30, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mana at Anime Expo[edit]

Mana has been announced a Guest of Honor at Anime Expo 2006. link. I think this should be added somewhere in the article, this being his first visit to the United States. Calicore 06:28, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MumRei . . .

"Favorites"[edit]

I removed the paragraph mentioning what his favorite colors and hobbies are. Not only are these things pretty unencyclopedic, but they're subject to change. Maybe we should mention his Italian horror films and curry cooking, but I think we can draw the line there. --Berserk798 05:17, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removed some items[edit]

I took out the mention of Mana's supposed first band "Ves.tearge". So far, no one has ever been able to produce a printed source that acknowledges the existence of that band. I'm not convinced it existed. I also took out the thing about Mana's previous claim to have gone to a music school. After all, Mana's definitely not afraid of taking liberties with the truth in interviews, and if he says conflicting things over the years, I think we should just go with the latest thing he's said. flowersofnight (talk) 23:27, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article Images[edit]

Can we please come to a consensus as to what photos are to be placed in the article, and then not change them? For a Wikipedia article to cycle through pictures the way Mana and Malice Mizer articles do is ridiculous. This isn't a fangirl's playground--we really just need one picture of him in EGL and one in EGA. Maybe a third of him in dix gear, but that's not even necessary. --Berserk798 02:40, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mana's Female Dressing[edit]

I just came across this when I was looking up Digimon stuff and I saw A MAN IN A DRESS. WHAT TYPE OF GUY DOES THAT. I am thinking this guy is gay. I think this guy is so weird for wearing girl's clothes both on and in stage, that just aien't right at all. To all you Mana fans out there, sorry for saying he is weird but I just think so. Johnny542 18:18, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay? He's not gay, for the record and he doesn't crossdress while performing in Moi dix Mois either. Berserk798 22:24, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Mana has never said a word abotu his sexual orientation. Either of you would need evidence to prove your case either way.

Yeah but why would he wear female clothing? Is he a transgender or something? Johnny542 02:14, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What would being gay have to do with wearing female clothing? Crossdressing often has nothing to do with homosexuality. He doesn't crossdress very much anymore, but obviously he just does it because he likes it. He's also very far from transgendered. He identifies himself as a man and he behaves like a man. Maybe you should watch a live performance of Moi dix Mois (his current music project) on Youtube or something. Berserk798 03:58, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Man, you sound like a big fan or something. Anyway sorry for that but who knows these days. It's a weird world out there.

A better question is why are you giving this idiot the time of day? This whole post should be deleted, as it is irrelavent to wikipedia's talk page. JanderVK
Transgender is not gay. It's true that crossdressing is more acceptable in Japanese performing arts because of roots in Kabuki & that fellow crossdresser Izam had a wife, but you are excrutiatingly defensive & homophobic.

Anyway, not to be rude or anything, but are you a girl or a boy? I want to know this because it is sometimes very hard to tell whether my fellow Wikipedians are males or females.

Johnny542 05:41, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

... I'm male. Berserk798 07:31, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay sorry. Johnny542 07:53, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why? What does that even mean? Berserk798 20:11, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know, I got a little crazy that time. Johnny542 02:26, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

•Regarding Mana's Femininity and cross-dressing tendencies, it is most likely due to some variation of a sexual fetish regarding transvesticism, or simply fetishistic transvesticism; it also allows Mana to remain anonymous to a degree as he has quoted himself to be shy and sensisitive at times and is a form of entertaining and bringing the music to a visual level (hence Visual Kei et cetera) and roleplaying; also quite popular in the crowded cities of Japan. Mana simply considers himself to be a man and although he purports his stage persona to be no different from that of his everyday lifestyle and quite on the contrary, due to popular widespread idiotic naive conclusions based upon homophobia; for the record, Mana is not a homosexual, and is not transgender as transgender does not imply any specific form of sexual orientation (e.g. homosexual, heterosexual, bisexual, et cetera) and mainly expresses the delicate simplicities of androdgyny, which is the foundation in which his elegant designer clothing line, Moi-même-Moitié, is fixated upon. Surprisingly unsurprising is the fact that approximately over half of those who engage in 'cross-dressing' are in fact heterosexual; and may engage in the activities for sexual gratification or other sexual fetishistic reasons, while it is almost immediately and undeniably assumed in the closed-mindedness within the United States that this behavior is almost certainly indicitive of homosexual orientation when it is highly the opposite and may be due to sexual fetishes, roleplaying et cetera. Don't be fooled or be foolish and make assumptions based upon knowledge you don't know and people you know even less or it is tantamount as foolish; if you don't understand it, then it is fair to assume that one is fearful of it; and if one is fearful of such a distant concept, than perhaps homosexuality is perhaps closer to your orientation than you know, tehehe. 13:33, 17 June 2007 (UTC)MoimemeMoitie

In the late 90s, there was a translated interview going around the Malice Mizer fan groups on Yahoo Groups where Mana said or wrote he wanted to be androgynous; equally male & female. Perhaps he's going for asexual/genderless. He actually pulls the effect off better in pants because his looks plus a dress makes for feminine overkill. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.135.167.21 (talk) 10:45, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mana's instruments[edit]

This article says that he plays guitar, synths and drums. Should it really be mentioned that he plays drums, since he never plays them on recordings and he only plays them publicly at fan events? Also, if we will include drums on the list, I think we need to add that he plays bass and accordion as well (which is almost a silly thing to do). Berserk798 22:32, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think it should say he plays bass and drums, but i think it should be mentioned that he does not play them actively in malice mizer or moi dix mois. (-ruka-seraph- 08:04, 24 January 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Extensive discography[edit]

Just saw the recent addition of the very extensive discography, and... ouch. That's quite a chunk of text. Not that I don't agree it deserves a mention, but would it perhaps make more sense to provide links to relevant sections on the Malice Mizer and Moi dix Mois pages instead? Images[edit]

A quick reminder to anyone new to Wikipedia: images are not allowed on Wikipedia unless they are in the public domain or fall under a fair use exemption. That means that magazine scans, photos found on websites, etc. are not accepted even though they may be used on many other sites across the Internet. Because of Wikipedia's rules, they will just end up getting deleted after a week or two, and the article will be left with a red link instead of a picture. Unless you have permission from the person who took the photo (and can prove it), don't bother uploading images of Mana (or people in general). flowersofnight (talk) 19:40, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removed a lot of stuff[edit]

I reverted a lot of overly-detailed info about Mana's upbringing that doesn't really belong in an encyclopedia article.
