Request for photo[edit]

Would be great to have a photo of the portrait of Joseph Martin that is often featured in biographies. Also, does anyone know if the gravesite at Belle Mont, Martin's Leatherwood Plantation where he died, is reachable on foot? It would be great to have a photo of this man's grave to go along with the entry. Regards, MarmadukePercy (talk) 01:38, 24 January 2009 (UTC) It would also be great to have a photo of the above-ground crypt of Martin's eldest son, Col. William Martin of Dixon Springs, Tennessee.[1][2] MarmadukePercy (talk) 21:13, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It would be extraordinarily nice to have a photo of the new memorial to General Joseph Martin at the courthouse square in Martinsville, unveiled recently. MarmadukePercy (talk) 21:49, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Col. John 'Jack' Martin of Kentucky[edit]

The addition of a Col. John Martin from Kentucky, who was apparently also an Indian agent, has been removed, pending a check of his possible descent from General Joseph Martin. The entry read as follows: "COL. JOHN (JACK) MARTIN, TREASURER OF INDIAN AFFAIRS ALSO KNOWN AS THE ROB ROY OF KENTUCKY" If the descent of Col. John can be proven, and footnoted (as I will attempt to do), then he will be reinserted. It wouldn't be surprising if a Kentucky Col. and Indian agent were a descendant of General Joseph. If anyone has any further substantial info on him, please post it here. Thank you. MarmadukePercy (talk) 23:42, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Joseph Martin's Indian wife[edit]

To describe Betsy Ward as Joseph Martin's "Cherokee wife" gives the impression she was 100% Cherokee, which she was not. Because her mother was Cherokee and her father was English, I have edited her ethnicity to "half-Cherokee." You (MarmadukePercy) previously removed my edit of "half-blooded," and this edit is a compromise.Hammerdrill (talk) 05:59, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Betsy Ward was a member of the Cherokee tribe. I left in the mention of her English-born father, but the fact she was 'half-blooded,' as you had it, seems immaterial to me. Her status as a member of the Cherokee tribe was that of a full member of the tribe. How exactly does her father's ethnicity figure into things? MarmadukePercy (talk) 06:14, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for leaving in the mention of her father's nationality. It does imply that Betsy Ward was half-Cherokee, half-caucasion if a reader of the article is paying attention; although the implication is liable to be lost if Nancy is described early in the sentence as Cherokee. You ask how her father's ethnicity figures into things? It might have been a question for Col. William Martin, who referred in print to Nancy Ward as a "half-breed Indian." Ethnicity was then and remains a subject of interest. Calling Nancy a Cherokee also speaks of ethnicity. Calling her half-Cherokee, as I have done, refines the subject.Hammerdrill (talk) 20:37, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, you make fair points, so let's leave it in. I do know that Col. William Martin had quite a bit to say on the subject of his father's relationship with Betsy Ward. Apparently it didn't sit well with the son, for obvious reasons. It's also been a subject that General Martin's descendants have grappled with for years, although I believe now it is widely accepted. What the Cherokees thought of it, I don't really know. Nice to find someone else interested in the old fellow. He was quite obscure for a very long time.
