Scot-land and Angle Lands[edit]

Just a note of caution when using the words England and Scotland and English and Scots in an historical context. The problem is that they haven't always meant quite the same thing, nor meant exactly the same geographical area, as they do today. The English kingdom of Northumbria reached as far north as the Firth of Forth, thus the Angle lands - 'England' - once included that area too. Scot-land the 'land of the Scots' originally meant only the area north of the Firth of Forth. The later larger Kingdom of Scotland eventually incorporated the northern half of Northumbria (by then called Lothian) and thus, despite the name, 'Scotland' now included a part of England, or at least a part of the 'Angle lands', and a people who whilst being subjects of the Scottish king long continued to describe themselves as English rather than Scottish. Writers in the past, almost as much as today, seem to have often been quite careless about what they meant. The confusion gets worse in the Norman period when one writes about the 'Scots' and 'English' fighting one another when the 'Scots' doing the fighting are mainly northernmost English led by one group of Norman aristocrats such as Robert the Bruce and are fighting the more southerly English who are themselves being led by another group of Normans. Hi everyone. I am the new coordinator for WikiProject History. we need people there!! right now the project seems to be semi-inactive. I am going to various WikiProjects whose topics overlap with ours, to request volunteers.
