Suggested that separate articles be created for:

Roman Colchester
Colchester churches
Colchester Garrison (article created Apr 16)

This would provide an opportunity for developing in-depth articles on these subjects. Main History of Colchester article would reference these. Davidbober 02:28, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I certainly agree with the churches being split off. As it stands, this section is more of an architectural overview and doesn't really fit with a history page. Walgamanus 00:19, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree... Coming across Colchester from a historical direction via the English Civil War the siege is an important event and warrants its own article. I'll have a go! --Cynnydd 10:34, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The name[edit]

Where did the name Colchester come from? It seems to be derived from the Latin castrum as in Chester, but was it ever given such a name in Roman times? When did it go from Colonia Claudia Victricensis to Colchester? Who then was a gentleman? (talk) 18:18, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Col part of Colchester, as with the name of the river Colne is derived from Latin Colonia - c.f. the origins of the name of Cologne in Germany, which also derives from Colonia. Razumukhin (talk) 17:17, 20 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dates[edit]

Richard III had visited the town several times, as a teenager in 1427 and again in 1467/68.

Richard III lived from 1452-1485. So the first date must be wrong. Valetude (talk) 03:27, 6 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
