Title[edit]

Seems overly generic and doubt this is the only one. Maybe Abu Sefein Church fire? nableezy - 18:05, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sluzzelin I dont think its the wrong church, I think we have the wrong coordinates. But this gives the church by the English name, and all the Arabic sources I see say it is the Abu Sufayan church. I used Abu Sefein as that is what the sources are using for this. nableezy - 19:00, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well maybe not, no clue anymore, removing the image too. nableezy - 19:03, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No, you might well be right, Nableezy. Al Jazeera says the church lies in Imbaba. What made me think it was another church was this removal of information on the fire in the article on Saint Mercurius Church in Coptic Cairo. I didn't know Imbaba was part of Giza. I currently can't solve this, but will try to find out more tomorrow, if it hasn't been resolved by then. ---Sluzzelin talk 19:34, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I *think* I have the right one down below (this), but it isnt the one we have an article for (though I also dont know if those coords are correct either tbh). nableezy - 20:02, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Anybody have thoughts on a better title? I think Abu Sefein Church (Giza) fire or something, though idk about disambiguating. There arent other fires at churches by the same name, but there seem to be a bunch of churches by that name in just the Cairo area. nableezy - 11:41, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

coords[edit]

The Arabic news results all point to كنيسة أبو سيفين, the Arabic Wikipedia article says it happened at ar:كنيسة أبو سيفين, and both the Arabic page and the English page for that church has the coordinates as 30°00′58″N 31°23′07″E / 30.01611°N 31.38528°E / 30.01611; 31.38528. Eugen Simion 14 removed the coordinates from here saying they are wrong, but I see no evidence for that and Ive gotten no response on their talk page regarding the coordinates. Im going to restore them now, but if somebody has a reason to hold off feel free to revert. nableezy - 18:21, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Look at the satellite images, in connection with the videos of the aftermath. It's an old neighbourhood where the fire took place. I think this is the correct location https://goo.gl/maps/4SJY6w3r9Yzg4gCc8 - EugεnS¡m¡on 18:44, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I think you are right tbh, which makes our articles on the church wrong (in multiple languages). nableezy - 18:53, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Actually neither of those are in Imbaba, which multiple sources put this church in. nableezy - 18:55, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Somebody from Egypt could help. This is very confusing because are multiple churches with the same name in Greater Cairo area. - EugεnS¡m¡on 18:57, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Im seeing a church by that name at this location. nableezy - 19:06, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going over to the location this morning and will check the coordinates. Agree that the issue of location is very confusing. There are a lot of churches in Greater Cairo with the same name. It would be good to note that Abdu Sefain is just another name to refer to Saint Mercurious aka Philpateer (good Wikipedia article at https://wiki.alquds.edu/?query=Saint_Mercurius). That would be very helpful thank you. If you're able to take any photos that would help as well (if you're willing to release them under a commons-accepted license). nableezy - 11:42, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Im nearly certain this is correct now, having seen the statement from the Coptic pope: "We are following with sorrow the tragic incident that occurred this morning in the Church of the Great Martyr Mercurius Abo Sefein in the Imbabah Airport area, north of Giza." nableezy - 14:22, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Abductive you are placing this in Cairo, when this happened in Giza. And yes, this church is in Imbaba, as seen in sources such as AP, CNN, al-Ahram, and the NYTimes. Why are you saying this did not happen in Imbaba? nableezy - 23:55, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, I see the later edits, thanks. Im not sure the coordinates are right though, dont have anything to really go off of here. nableezy - 23:56, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I looked it up in Arabic. Google Maps shows a photo of a door that matches a pic in the news of the charred door with two policemen. Abductive (reasoning) 23:59, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well awesome thank you very much. nableezy - 00:05, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And it looks like I was right up above too with the google maps location. nableezy - 00:10, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I was mislead by the similarity in the names and architecture, and the (rare) lack of a tag in Wikimapia. Abductive (reasoning) 01:14, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

WSJ has a map and it matches what we have, so think we good on location now. nableezy - 14:53, 18 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
