The Bonga family is important in Minnesota because it is the first black family in the state. Pierre Bonga, the father, and George Bonga, both were working in the fur trade long before Dred Scott, and they were free men who intermarried and raised families.

I realize this is a little rough, but I have to steal time from my job to enter information, and I'm new at it. Thanks.

Pictures make articles come alive - I think an image would be awesome. Two possible criteria would make the image public domain:

If it were published before 1923 (in a periodical, postcard, book, etc.)
If the photographer or artist has been dead 100 years.

Since the man died in 1880, certainly #2 is true (unless someone painted him posthumously). Assuming that's true, scan, take a digital photo, or download from a website the image onto your computer. Then insert this text at the top of the article: [[Image:Bonga.jpg|thumb|George Bonga - courtesy of [[Minnesota Historical Society]]]] Then click show preview. Then click the red "Image:Bonga.jpg" and fill in the blanks (especially the Licensing section - click on Author died 100 yrs ago). After clicking "upload", use your browser "back" button to get to the preview screen and click "Show preview" again. A thumbnail of the image should appear at the top right. Photo[edit]

FYI: I took copied a photo out of a book and put it in the article (this particular photo can be found in multiple books). The rationale is that the photo was originally published in Bonga's lifetime so it has easily passed the copyright limit. I don't, though, have any info on the original photographer or where and precisely when it was published. Ideally it would be nice to get that info just to make the justification for fair use clearer (I don't think anybody would seriously argue but still ...). If anybody has these details please feel free to update the photo page.

It seems like 1874 is the most likely date of his death
