Untitled[edit]

I created this page because, as several people had pointed out, the interactions between the ω-3 and -6 EFA didn't properly belong under Omega-3 fatty acids.

I'd still like to have a long section on the different disease states that are affected by the 3/6 balance. Each one of the diseases discussed on the NIH page deserves its own subsection.David.Throop 05:08, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DHA synthesis[edit]

The diagram in the article indicates that DHA (22:6w3) is synthesized via delta-4 desaturase. But I've read that this may not be correct, and EPA -> DHA actually goes through a more complicated elongation -> delta-6 -> beta-oxidation process. [1] [2] I'm still a novice at understanding this all, but can anyone shed some light on which process is "correct"? Do both happen to some extent in different parts of the body? The delta-6 thing makes sense to me, since if the delta-6 process is a limited resource, it would shed some light on those studies that indicate that dietary LNA is readily converted to EPA but not DHA. Putative Mistakes[edit]

You have made a number of mistakes in your Figure (2) Essential fatty acid production and metabolism to form Eicosanoids. Please recheck your source and get the names of the fatty acids correct - there is a difference between linolenic and linoleic acids.Tofudr 00:09, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The article describes arachadonic acid as "essential" but goes on to state it is synthesized in vivo from linoleic acid. If AA is synthesized from another nutrient, doesn't this mean its not "essential" in the nutritional sense?

Paradox of Dietary GLA[edit]

The statement in this section that "Supplementing dietary GLA increases serum DGLA without increasing serum AA.[17][20]" is contradicted by results presented in Barham, et al., "Addition of Eicosapentaenoic Acid to g-Linolenic Acid–Supplemented Diets Prevents Serum Arachidonic Acid Accumulation in Humans," J. Nutr. 130:1925-1931, 2000.

However, they did show that co-supplementation with EPA results in no significant change in serum AA.

Speculative Superiority of Krill Oil[edit]

The last paragraph in the intro made largely unsubstantiated claims regarding the superiority of krill oil over fish oil, with no appropriate backing references. Although preliminary studies regarding krill oil appear promising, it's far too early to declare krill oil the undisputed king of omega-3s without any head-to-head RCTs.

I cleaned up the paragraph to better reflect the available literature, although many of the sources I referenced are primary studies. The conclusion from this 2015 review sums things up nicely:

" Studies suggest that there may be a difference in the bioavailability of EPA and DHA after intake of KO [krill oil] and FO [fish oil]. However, more human studies designed to compare the effect of KO and FO are needed to conclude if the bioavailability of EPA and DHA differs between KO and FO. Furthermore, it is also necessary to document beneficial health effects of KO with high-quality human studies and to investigate whether these effects differ compared to the effects observed after regular fish and FO intake.
