Table questioned[edit]

Is that table really necessary? It seems awfully esoteric. I think it should be removed, or at least moved to ASCII Art. —Chowbok 05:09, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I put it in, and I was worried if it was a bit esoteric as well. I included it because personally, I've found it very helpful. I was first considering putting it in ASCII art, but considering how generalized that article is, and precisely because it is esoteric, I thought the article devoted to the font to be more fitting. To be fair, a computer typography is an esoteric subject. - JustSomeKid

Letter Width[edit]

I also came to this article looking for size information.
The IBM Selectric typewriter article, the the point (typography), and the leading article leads me to expect that "12 point" text ("pica") typed on that typewriter is exactly 10 characters per inch ("10 pitch") and (exactly?) 6 lines per inch. It also could type "10 point" text ("elite") at exactly 12 characters per inch ("12 pitch"); does "elite" still have a line height of 6 lines per inch?
The (extremely common) single-spaced 12 point Courier text is about the same as the larger "10 pitch" Selectric fonts, right? If so, "12 point" Courier is 10 characters per inch horizontally ("10 pitch") and 6 rows of text per inch vertically. If so, each character fits in a little box 1/10 inch wide by 1/6 inch tall.
This article mentions "55 lines per page" sourced to a reference that says
"Courier Final Draft is ... six lines per inch. ... By contrast, Courier New seems to be ... about 5.3 lines per inch..." -- Roland Stroud
Is there a better reference would could use for the physical size of these characters?

Courier vs Courier New[edit]

This article talks about "Courier" then jumps to "Courier New" without explaining why there are two different terms being used. I think the article should be rephrased to only use one term, or have an explanation of the two terms added. GK1 05:18, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Standard typewriter typeface?[edit]

"it soon became a standard font used throughout the typewriter industry". Really? I must say I've never seen Courier used in typewritten documents, at least not the ones typed on a manual typewriter. The typeface I would consider "standard" for typewriters is the one used here, here, and (to show it's not unique to the U.S.) here. That's not Courier. Courier uses the "opentail g" , while the typewriter typeface uses the "looptail g" . Other differences are in the capital A (Courier has a serif on top, the typewriter face doesn't), and lowercase c, f, and s (the typewriter face has little balls on the ends of the characters, Courier doesn't). —Angr 20:37, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Monospace typewriter fonts used in manual typewriters preceded modern Courier used later in typewriters and in computerized word processing and typesetting as a standard font. Courier has subtle differences to prevent Courier from casually being used to forge pre-dated typewritten documents. Courier mimics manual typewriter fonts, but not quite: for instance, the Underwood and Olympia typewriters use a font with Old Style figures (selected figures have ascenders or descenders which sometimes made users think there was something wrong with the alignment) while the versions of Courier I have seen in different iterations for PC or Mac or typesetters use Regular figures (all same height and base aligned). After Courier was developed, typewriter manufacturers did adopt Courier as a font for new typewriters, but the original intent of Courier was a standard typewriter font; however, even the different PostScript versions of Courier differ among themselves in subtle ways. Display[edit]

The article has serious display/rendering problems. For users without Lucida Console typeface installed, or who choose to override the webpage font selection by default in their browser (like me), no Lucida Sans Typewriter or Lucida Console is seen.
