Now that we have a prototype for the list in table format, it calls to question whether the community will support maintaining two separate lists. I proposed a vote at Talk:List_of_ISO_image_software to gauge the community's support for maintaining two lists or consolidating the lists into one. Table Headers / Scrolling

MagicDisk

The link for the MagicDisk software leads to a product called Magic Iso Maker which seems to be shareware, not freeware. There is an option to buy it for around $25 and no information about the software license. Image Master Information

I noticed that for the program Image Master there wasn't a wikipage. I don't know enough to start a page, but if a link to the webpage was added it would be slightly more useful. I don't know if adding an external link to all the programs would be useful, but it wouldn't take up much room and it might save some clicks and be generally useful. Incorrect information

I don't have the time to check all the information in that table, but I noticed that some of it is definetely incorrect. First, MagicIso supports much more formats, not only ISO; I think that they have created the UIF format. Second, the uif2iso application is available for multiple platforms. Third, I am not sure, but I doubt that there are so many tools which work only on Amiga. The link is wrong (it's redirected to Microsoft's article which does not even mention this product) Plus it looks hard to find (unable to find a webpage about it, only direct links to an executable), and unmaintained (the name of the exe mentions winxp). Vandalism?

I don't know the topic at all, but this edit came from an account that appears to have been used almost entirely for vandalism. It made quite a few removals, which should probably be restored. Negative. You have misinterpreted the edit. The aforementioned edit is not vandalism at all and no removals is made; only some items are moved to and fro. Revision of this article?

This seems to be a strange mishmash, consisting almost entirely of CD/DVD imaging software with a few HDD ones thrown in randomly. I believe that should be revised, and perhaps the solution is to merge with disk cloning as proposed; however I believe that perhaps both articles should better be revised and divided to CD/DVD cloning&imaging and HDD cloning&imanging which I feel would be better categorization. --Arny (talk) 22:02, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

@Arny: Hi. This is a good idea. I think I did read something about "disc" and "disk" in MOS:COMPUTING. Acronis True Image, Image for Windows (disk imaging), Norton Ghost, Macrium Reflect and libguestfs can be banished to Comparison of disk cloning software and List of disk cloning software. That's not the only problem. The layout in your edit is poor. And apparently, you think everything licensed under GPL is automatically free and open-source. (Free yes, but open-source needs additional investigation.)

Yes the table will re arrange but not in an order that is helpful.

There are three main categories of software license "pay for use", "free", and "open source", each having many licenses.

most people don't care exactly what the licenses is they just care about category (is it free or is it open source).

With the current sort method these categories do not get grouped by the sort and the sort is thus ineffective for the user.

2) Yes everything GPL must be open-source; "GPL ... guarantees ... the freedom... modify the software" you can only do that if it's open.

Actually, there are five major categories of software: Commercial, trialware (dominant form), freeware (gratis), free (libre) and free and open-source. For difference between the third and the fourth, see Gratis versus libre.

Now, to solve this problem, we can assign sort keys to the fields.

Alright. I need to know if we are on the same page so far. Should I start talking about the sort keys themselves, or do I need to explain more about something? (e.g. about what a sort key is?) And do you mind if I moved this whole conversation to the article talk page?

1) I would classify trial-ware as a sub category of Commercial and doubt anyone cares about the destruction, same thing for open-source and "libre", but I don't really care what categories are used so long as the sorting is from most to least permissive.

2) I assume you retract your comment about the GPL "GPL make[s] sure that you have the ... source code or can get it if you want it..."

3) Please make the edit you recommend to include sort keys.

@Codename Lisa: Yes the column is now usable.

Semantic: "Open-source" is more accurate as you can't assume the political goals of the projects which is what "Free software" is according to Stallman. "Open-source" is also more technically descriptive as "Free software" is misleading to people who don't know. "libre software" is a more accurate description, though really only the GPL is "libre software" other licenses are more accepting of use with non liberated source code.

BTW: The word "linking" does not appear anywhere in the GPL and there are still many people who claim "linking problems" with other software. The problem with Wikipedia here is that in case the term GPL appears, religious people appear and as a result, many false claims appeared in OSS licensing related articles. Software under the GPL is not free as it's license contains unneeded burdens - burdens that cannot be enforced in court as the GPL is in conflict with the law (Copyright law Section 17 Paragraph 106) and thus only the non-conflicting parts can be enforced in court. The conflicting parts are those that try to redefine what a derivative work is. So de-facto, the GPL is not a so called "strong copyleft" license, it just adds non-free claims. ISO Master once had an article. (Click on it!) It was deleted because of the absence of secondary coverage. (Inclusion in Ubuntu and Debian is both primary and dependent coverage.) 7-Zip external plugin

There is an external plugin for 7-Zip named Iso7z. Plugin allows user to open additional disk image formats in 7-Zip: CCD/IMG, CDI, CSO, ISZ, MDS/MDF, NRG.
