Why China-US comparison?[edit]

Can someone explain to me the idea behind the "comparation" (shouldn't it be "comparison"?!?) between the US and China??!? Are we all starting to compare to the worst now instead of comparing ourselves to the best? And why does it matter anyway? If the Americans feel like letting the planet go down the toilet, why do the Chinese have to do the same? Is it really helpful to mention that "fuel economy standards [...] are more stringent than those in Australia, Canada and the United States"? How about comparing to some EU countries? How about some hard facts (studies, scientific reports) on the devastating effects of climate change on China in the future? ... There's lots of work to be done here!! --MarsmanRom (talk) 15:03, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This article is very biased, and against China. Although chinese CO2 output is the highest worldwide, the per-capita (per person) CO2 production is far, far lower than that of the US - one american is equivalent to about 6 chinese people when it comes to emissions. Furthermore, very little of the chinese CO2 production is emitted in producing goods for the domestic market - almost all of it is a result of production for exports - most of which go to the US and Europe. So really, it's the US and EU's taste for cheap plastic that accounts for the bulk of Chinese emissions. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.152.21.103 (talk) 01:03, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

99.* errors[edit]

The following has been added repeatedly by the 99.* anons, without an attempt at explaining relevance:

  1. {tlx|For|current global climate change|Global warming}}
  2. (in the "See also" section) Scientific opinion on climate change
  3. {{sustainability}}

Clarification needed in section References regarding ...

  • Update: Climate change: Holding back hail Nature (journal). The amount of hail falling in China has almost halved since 1980 because of global warming...hail is also decreasing in the United States Therefore the pattern could be a global phenomenon linked to climate change.... 03 Sep 2008, Research Highlights from Nature China 99.181.156.173 (talk) 00:09, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Relevance? And doesn't that counteract the claim that climate change causes insured damage? — Arthur Rubin (talk) 05:39, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Art, please attempt to focus, you are again not helping to clarify wp articles ... see Debate over China's economic responsibilities for climate change mitigation, this article. 99.181.145.99 (talk) 19:16, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you frequently introduce discussions of topic A linking to topic B on topic C's page. And you've been edit warring to include a Swiss insurance company's estimates of damage due to global warming on multiple articles. This statement notes that global warming may reduce damage due to hail, which the Swiss company undoubtedly did not take into account.
But relevance to this article is still questionable. It might relate to a different article on climate change in China, but it does not relate at all to the subject of this article. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 02:55, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Look at where the Nature (journal) Update is now in the article and who put it there. One must endeavor to understand first, and attempt to communicate second, please. 99.181.157.60 (talk) 18:04, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The Nature article by Tim Reid has original article citations by Xie, B., Zhang, Q. & Wang, Y. Trends in hail in China during 1960–2005. Geophysical Research Letters doi: 10.1029/2008GL034067 (2008). Is this "Update relevant to this article, maybe moved to Effects of global warming, and/or Regional effects of global warming? 99.181.128.190 (talk) 04:41, 23 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Removed; clearly irrelevant to this article. Thanks for pointing it out. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 07:19, 23 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Modification[edit]

I'd like to revise the structure as the following: "Introduction", "Current Situation", "Effects of Climate Change" (global and China), "Mitigation Measures and Policy", and "Debate".

I would want to refer to articles in the Chinese government website, journals and news.

Articles I want to refer to: http://www.gov.cn/jrzg/2011-11/22/content_2000047.htm (the China' s response to climate change policies and action (2011)) http://www.theworldin.com/article/14435/edition2018chinas-climate-awakening (China’s changing attitude to climate change) http://www.gov.cn/zhengce/content/2016-11/04/content_5128619.htm http://money.163.com/17/0602/22/CLV6U58B002580S6.html http://re.indiaenvironmentportal.org.in/files/The%20impacts%20of%20climate%20change%20on%20water.pdf https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF02656915

It would be great if you could update this article. But as Greenhouse gas emissions by China has now been created please could you add your info about "Mitigation Measures and Policy" in that article rather than here. Thanks Chidgk1 (talk) 16:35, 26 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Chidgk1, I see you have been here already in 2019. I think the thinking about the structuring is slowly changing now, whereby Climate change in China should become the parent article and Greenhouse gas emissions by China the sub-article. I have just proposed a restructuring to that effect further down below on this page. EMsmile (talk) 04:30, 9 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Peer reviewed papers with observed effects of climate change in China[edit]

Hi -- I have compiled a large and diverse list of observed, negative effects of climate change in China to date. All peer reviewed and categorized. Please feel free to use and add to the relevant sections of this article. https://climateobserved.org/MapViewList?Name=China Dawei20 (talk) 03:33, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested changes to headings and structure[edit]

I suggest to change the headings and structure of this article to be in line with the template that has been proposed here for all articles of the nature "Climate change in Country X": https://wiki.alquds.edu/?query=Wikipedia:WikiProject_Climate_change/Style_guide (see also discussion on that page's talk page). Anyone has any objections? If not, who's got time to give it a go? I am slowly working away at this for all the countries but would love some collaborators.EMsmile (talk) 04:28, 9 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Done. When more people work on this article, please look at this article in conjunction with Greenhouse gas emissions by China. There is a bit of debate about where to put content about mitigation. For now we have it in Greenhouse gas emissions by China, so make sure the articles interlink well (and don't duplicate) on the topic of mitigation. paris agreement[edit]

Hello! We are three students from the Ecological Effects of Climate Changes course at Uppsala University. We're working on updating the paris agreement in some of the climate change articles as part of our coursework. We're learning and welcome any feedback. --Jojo2952 (talk) 21:37, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

We really need to tidy this up: content about mitigation is here but also at greenhouse gas emissions by China. My preference would be that all the mitigation content is in this article, not in the greenhouse gas emissions by China. So I think it should be moved from there to here. (same for other country articles that have two articles, one for "climate change in country X" and one for "greenhouse gas emissions by country X". Pinging @Chidgk1 EMsmile (talk) 08:25, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A discussion about this had been started here too but never concluded: https://wiki.alquds.edu/?query=Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Climate_change/Style_guide#Where_to_put_mitigation_if_there_is_a_%E2%80%9CGHG_emissions_by_X%E2%80%9D_article? EMsmile (talk) 08:26, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If it was me I would put all the mitigation in the GHG articles, but as I am being lazy on this if you change something I am not going to object or revert Chidgk1 (talk) 13:33, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am curious what your reasoning would be to put all the mitigation in the GHG articles? I've explained my reasoning for not doing it in that way at the link above (will copy it here again):
  • I am proposing to move all the mitigation content to climate change in the United States to make it more consistent with the structure we are using for the other climate change in country X articles. Also the climate change in the United States does have a section about mitigation already, so now we have mitigation content spread over two articles. See also here for the proposed standard structure of the articles in the group "climate change in country X".
  • Another reason for my proposal is that mitigation is about more than just GHGE reductions. It's also about enhancing carbon sinks. Hence, it fits better in the climate change articles rather than in the GHGE emission articles.
  • And it would make it more consistent with the main articles on climate change mitigation and greenhouse gas emissions: Anything that talks about reducing GHGEs is placed at climate change mitigation, not at greenhouse gas emissions.
And I agree with you that it would be a fair bit of work to fix it up for the five articles that have greenhouse gas emissions by country (China, US, Turkey, Russia, UK) but I think it would be worth doing. And rather do it now than later in case people start to create more greenhouse gas emissions articles at the country level. EMsmile (talk) 10:38, 27 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
