Plot descriptions cannot be copied from other sources, including official sources, unless these can be verified to be public domain or licensed compatibly with Wikipedia. They must be written in original language to comply with Wikipedia's copyright policy. In addition, they should only briefly summarize the plot; detailed plot descriptions may constitute a derivative work. See Wikipedia's Copyright FAQ.

Copyright concerns[edit]

Questions have been raised concerning the copyright status of episode summaries listed here (see original listing at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2010 December 21). The suspected source may have copied us, or it's possible that they copied from the sources which our contributors used, perhaps in a mistaken understanding that plot summaries could be replicated from press releases. I have certainly verified that the description of the episode "The Predator in the Pool" came from a Press Release: [1].

It is understandable that contributors might presume that these widely replicated releases can be reproduced on Wikipedia, but I'm afraid that this is not the case. While producers of shows are naturally pleased for publicity, they may not be pleased to release their content for modification and commercial reuse, as our license requires.

Other episode summaries, too, seem to have been copied from press release. For example, "The Bond in the Boot" in the foundational edit of this article, here, follows the content of this reproduced Press Release. (That foundational edit does not seem to have been the origin point of the text. I believe it was copied from elsewhere, perhaps from List of Bones episodes, although the necessary attribution does not seem to have been supplied for the split; see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.)

The episode summaries have been blanked pending an investigation into their origin. If they are copied, they will be removed. Interested contributors are certainly welcome to provide rewrites from scratch that do comply with copyright policy. --Moonriddengirl ^(talk) 16:35, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I created this page on April 4, 2010, so any episodes that already had summaries (probably half), were just transferred to this page. So I'm unaware of where they came from or if they were copied. Most of the other episodes though are copied from the press releases. I'll gladly help rewrite all the summaries. I'm actually going to start a rewatch of season 5 on DVD pretty soon, so I'll be able to write the summaries from scratch. Drovethrughosts (talk) 18:33, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
