Basant is not a religious festival[edit]

The festival of Basant heralds the arrival of spring in this fertile land of Panjab. It has nothing to do with religion and has been practised in the area for several thousand years. It is also, a unique cultural form of expression unique to the city of Lahore from where this 'kite fever' has now spread to the rest of the world.

B.S. Nijjar is telling a fabricated story that is without any historical refrences!!! Bawaey di Marhi has nothing to do with a Hindu speaking ill of anybody. He was someone who was persecuted by the authorities at that time(like Dulla Bhatti) and was a holy man who commanded great respect, some jealous brahmans of Sialkot made up false stories that he spoke ill of the Emperor and subedar and says that he fears no one but GOD, the administration brought him to Lahore and had him executed in the month of Magh. As, Basant is the most prominent day of Magh and was the biggest festival in Lahore even at that time and long before that, his followers in Lahore(hindu, muslim and sikh) started organizing a Mela on that day. There is also a place where sikhs used to hold a mela in Lahore at the same day. It has nothing to do with the festival of Basant. Its just convenient for people to remember if its on Basant. Basant is an ancient agrarian festival. Punjab being an agrarian society, where yellow sarhon(sarson or canola) fields are in full bloom on Basant people usually wear yellow and fly kites. In recent years this fabricated story about Bawaey di Marhi has been circulated by Islamists in order to get Basant celebrations banned. Basant is celebrated all over east Punjab, Harayana, Himachal, Jammu amd Delhi as well. Nobody in these places knows where Bawaey di Marhi is or who he was for that matter!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.126.199.122 (talk) 22:01, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
