Computers are already being embedded in many devices, computing is spread throughout the environment, users are mobile, information appliances are becoming increasingly available and communication is made easier-between individuals, between individuals and things, and between things. Ambient intelligence in the future

What is the view for the future, how will ambient intelligence be manifested 10 years from now? We're especially interested in tackling the question of how our environment will recognise and respond to the presence of individuals in an invisible way in the future? There is a vision of the future where we will be surrounded by intelligent electronic environments, being sensitive and responsive to our needs and present whenever we need it. By instrumenting public and private spaces to understand their users activities and requirements, embedded intelligent systems can react for example by guiding an elderly person or entertaining children. Ambient intelligence at home

The Journal of Digital Information (article No. 271, http://jodi.tamu.edu/Articles/v05/i04/Raisinghani/#amidigital (2004) Ambient Intelligence: Changing Forms of Human-Computer Interaction and their Social Implications) suggests that the driving forces for applying AmI for home use are:

My house, or more precisely my boiler, asks my diary what time I'll be coming home. My diary replies stating I'll be working late. So the boiler delays turning on by 1 hour. This safes me money and helps conserve energy (saves the environment).

Ambient intelligence in public space

How might ambient intelligence be manifested in public space and what is happening at the moment? Annukka & Jenna 09:55, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Public spaces are places for communication between people and things. A "mobile" is not limited to the function of making telephone calls, but has come to be used for communication between person and person, between person and thing, between thing and thing.

ERCIM News No.47, October 2001 [1], Jari Ahola wrote: 'Defined by the EC Information Scociety Technologies Advisory Group in a vision of the Information Society, Ambient Intelligence emphasises on greater user-friendliness, more efficient services support, user-empowerment, and support for human interactions. In this vision, people will be surrounded by intelligent and intuitive interfaces embedded in everyday objects around us and an environment recognising and responding to the presence of individuals in an invisible way by year 2010.'

Dubious

The Overview section begins

More and more people make decisions based on the effect their actions will have on their own inner, mental world. This experience-driven way of acting is a change from the past when people were primarily concerned about the use value of products and services, ...

This is entirely too broad and sweeping. One might find a source making just this claim; I would still say it's overstated. Honestly it seems pretty specious to me, but someone familiar with a more measured version of this thesis may be able to rewrite it to make more reasonable, specific claims, with sources. I'm marking it with a Dubious tag. Thanks. Ale And Quail (talk) 19:20, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Add Phillips and Information Society and Technology Advisory Group (ISTAG) to the Introduction Section

The introduction mentions that the group led by Eli Zehlka were the ones who first described ambient intelligence, but there's no mention of Phillips' and ISTAG's role in the creation of the concept. Additional reason for reversion of recent edit

Hi @MrOllie,

I just realized that you reverted my last edits to the Ambient Intelligence article, and was wondering if it is just because I cited Forbes, or if there's anything else.

Most of the edits I made were copy edits to touch up the language, and I think that they are acceptable edits. I would like to remake these edits without the Forbes reference, but I wanted to make sure you didn't have any other issues with the edits.

A few reasons: Forbes is an unreliable source, and the opening sentences should be a very simply summary of the rest of the article. Packing them with examples and technical language is not an improvement. I also found the grammar to be confusing. MrOllie (talk) 13:39, 10 February 2023 (UTC)

Would you be so kind as to provide your opinion on the following revision of my edits. Based on your comments, I removed the texts based on the Forbes citation, and simplified the language of my edits a little bit.

The suggested edited text is:

"In computing, ambient intelligence (AmI) refers to electronic environments that are sensitive and responsive to the presence of people. Originally conceived in the late 1990s by Eli Zelkha and his team at Palo Alto Ventures, they coined the term “ambient intelligence” to describe a vision of the future of consumer electronics, telecommunications, and computing in the years 2010 – 2020.[1][2][3][4] According to this vision, devices would work together to help people carry out their everyday life activities, tasks, and rituals in an intuitive way. The devices would do this by using information and intelligence hidden in the networks connecting them to each-other (for example: The Internet of Things). As these devices grew smaller, their connectivity increased, and they became more integrated into our environment, their underlying technological framework would disappear into our surroundings until only the user interface would remain perceivable by human users."
