Talent and university studies[edit]

The article says "Albert was born at Rickendorf near Helmstedt, the son of a farmer in a small village; but because of his talent, he was sent to study at the University of Prague and the University of Paris." Who noticed his talent and in what age? What kind of mechanism for accepting talented people did exist back then? Was there some kind of "scholarship"?
