Self-name[edit]

Is it known how to say "Adûnaic" in Adûnaic? Hellerick (talk) 14:45, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Black Adûnaic[edit]

Regarding the language of the Black Númenóreans in the Third Age, the articles says:

Although "classical" Adûnaic was not spoken after the Akallabêth, surviving groups of the King's Men (referred to as Black Númenóreans) who served and worshipped Sauron (notably in Umbar) continued to speak a debased form of the language (called Black Adûnaic) as recently as the War of the Ring at the end of the Third Age.

Please could we have a citation for Black Adûnaic, is there such a language? I checked an Adûnaic article at Ardalambion http://folk.uib.no/hnohf/adunaic.htm and it makes no mention of Black Adûnaic, or of Black Númenóreans speaking Adûnaic. The Ardalambion article only mentions Black Númenóreans once when it says:

We are not told whether the evil Black Númenóreans who had sailed to Middle-earth before the Downfall and eventually rose to power among the Haradrim attempted to preserve and cultivate a purer form of Adûnaic - at least as a noble or learned tongue among themselves.

Also regarding my first quote, how do we know what language the Black Númenóreans spoke at the end of the Third Age?

It is interesting that Black Númenóreans mentioned by Tolkien include Herumor (Second Age character named in Quenya), Fuinur (Second Age character named in Sindarin) and Queen Berúthiel (Third Age character named in Sindarin).

Source of sample text[edit]

The section "Sample Text" is uncited. Is this something that Tolkien composed (despite the disclaimer earlier in the article that he "created very few original words in Adûnaic, mostly names")? In that case it should be cited. If it's something some editor composed on their own, then it's Original Research and should be removed, or replaced with canonical text, like Lowdham's fragments from The Notion Club Papers. I've located the apparent source of the "sample text" here: [1]. This is described as "attempt to translate the Aerlinn in edhil o Imladris into Neo-Adûnaic", so is clearly OR (and is not even Tolkien's language).
