Name[edit]

"1985 diethylene glycol wine scandal"? Pshaw! This article needs the words "Austrian" and "antifreeze" in its name. The common man will accept no substitutes. jnestorius^(talk) 17:28, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Glycol[edit]

Don't want to edit/vandalize but someone might as well delete:

"German wine chemists have stated that it is unlikely that an individual winemaker of a small winery had sufficient chemical knowledge to devise the scheme, implying that the recipe must have been drawn up by a knowledgeable wine chemist consulting for a large-scale producer."

That's bullshit. Having grown up in a wine producing region I know for a fact that everyone knew about glycol. Small town drugstores selling antifreeze by the truckload... in summer! At that time testing for glycol was kinda complicated and expensive, these days it's a standard test so it's not a problem anymore (I guess). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.86.113.158 (talk) 14:28, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The statement comes from the source given. If you have reliable sources indicating that it has been common practice to add DEG or other toxic compounds to wines in other areas, you should of course add them, but hearsay doesn't qualify as WP:RS.
