She went on to win the Miss Universe pageant in Seoul, South Korea, becoming the fifth Miss Universe from the United States as well as the second from South Carolina after Miriam Stevenson in 1954. She is best known for work on the popular show Baywatch.

Weatherly attended Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina where she won the Miss Clemson homecoming pageant in October of 1978. She then entered and won the 1979 Miss South Carolina and Miss USA crowns. This led to her Miss Universe win in South Korea in 1980.

For a time in the 1980s, she was romantically linked with former Clemson football player Dwight Clark, then with the San Francisco 49er's.
