Markus Förderer, ASC, BVK (born 14 July 1983) is a renowned German cinematographer recognized for his contributions to major Hollywood films and television productions, including "I Origins" (2014), "Independence Day: Resurgence" (2016), and "Red Notice" (2021), along with his latest work on the Apple TV series "Constellation."

Förderer's unique cinematography was acknowledged with the German Cinematography Award in 2012 for his work on the film "Hell", and in 2016 for “I Remember”^[1]. He further received the Bavarian Film Award in 2020 for his outstanding cinematography in "The Colony."

Early Life and Career

Markus Förderer pursued his cinematic education at the University of Television and Film Munich^[2]. Upon graduating in 2011, he lensed his debut feature film "Hell," directed by Tim Fehlbaum. The film not only earned Förderer the German Cinematography Award in 2012 but also garnered international acclaim for its unique visual style, propelling him into the Hollywood scene.

He collaborated with acclaimed director Mike Cahill on "I Origins" (2014), which marked the beginning of a lasting creative partnership. Since then they worked on the pilot for the TV series "Rise," and "Nightflyers," as well as the 2021 feature film "Bliss".

At the age of 30, Förderer served as the cinematographer for Roland Emmerich's film "Independence Day: Resurgence".^[3] His collaboration with Emmerich began a year earlier with the historic film "Stonewall."

In 2020, Förderer joined forces with Rawson Marshall Thurber for the film "Red Notice," which subsequently became the most-watched film on Netflix.

Continuing his collaboration with director Tim Fehlbaum, Förderer worked on "The Colony" after "Hell." Recently, they completed principal photography for their upcoming historic drama, "September 5” starring Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro and produced by Sean Penn.

Since 2019, Markus Förderer has been a member of the American Society of Cinematographers, also holding memberships in the German Society of Cinematographers and the German Film Academy.

Personal Life

Markus Förderer is married to Julie Förderer, a photographer and lighting designer.
