One Mega Group, Inc., previously known as Mega Magazines and Publications, Inc. and Mega Publishing Group, stylized as One MEGA Group Inc. and shortened as OMGI, is a Filipino mass media company founded in 1991 by Sari V. Yap[1] and owned by AGC Power Holdings Corporation.[2]

The company’s media brands attract more than 6.7 million consumers in print, digital and social media platforms combined. These include MEGA, MEGA Man, MEGAStyle, MEGA Entertainment, MEGA Active, MEGA Drag, Lifestyle Asia, BluPrint, Modern Parenting, The Game and The Business Manual.

History

One Mega Group, Inc. traces its roots back to Yap’s days in graduate school, working towards a Masters degree in Media Management at the University of Navarre in Spain. Inspired by the fashion magazine Telva, Yap desired to create a fashion magazine that caters especially to Filipino women. She took her thesis on entrepreneurship and developed it into MEGA,[3] the Philippines’ first Filipino-owned glossy fashion magazine. MEGA was published under MEGA Magazines & Publications Inc. (MMPI).

MEGA’s first office, located in Timog Avenue, was dubbed the “chicken farm” due to its location being next to a vacant lot with chickens.[3]

Following the launch of MEGA, several titles were also released:

  • Meg, a fashion and lifestyle magazine geared towards the younger generation of stylish readers, was launched in 1998.
  • BluPrint, the Philippines’ first architecture and design sourcebook, was launched in 1999.[4]
  • Appetite, MMPI’s food magazine, was launched in 2000 and printed until 2016.
  • MyHome, a home and design sourcebook, was launched in 2000 and printed until 2018.

Acquisition and expansion

In 2002, MMPI acquired Lifestyle Asia, the first luxury publication in the Philippines.[5] Prior to the acquisition, Lifestyle Asia was considered to be MEGA Magazine’s primary competitor. Along with Lifestyle Asia, MMPI also acquired two entertainment titles, Celebrity Living and Inside Showbiz.

By 2007, what started out as MEGA Magazines & Publications Inc. evolved into the MEGA Publishing Group. Under the MEGA Publishing Group, all the existing titles acquired or launched by Yap continued operations. That same year, the company launched Condo Living, an interior design magazine focused on teaching readers living in condos how to be comfortable in their own space.

Television

In 2010, MEGA expanded into television, launching its show Gen M: Generation MEGA, the MEGA Young Designers Competition 2011.[6] The first homegrown fashion competition was a television show incarnation of MEGA’s annual Young Designers Competition, which was a runway design competition run by the brand from 1994.[7] This was simply rebranded to MEGA Young Designers Competition by its second season. The television show ran for three seasons from 2011-2013 on ETC.

The following year, MEGA Fashion Crew was launched. MEGA’s second reality television show was a competition for upcoming hair stylists, makeup artists, photographers, fashion stylists and female models in the search for the next big fashion crew.[8] The show ran for three seasons from 2011-2014 on ETC.[9][10]

In 2012, OMGI’s youth-oriented magazine Meg launched its own reality TV competition, I Am Meg: Own the World In Style.[11] The reality competition was a search for young women of style and substance to become the Meg Style Ambassador. The show ran for three seasons from 2012-2014 on ETC.

Other television shows produced by OMGI were Appetite Wars, Appetite Magazine’s cooking competition, which only ran for one season on ETC 2nd Avenue in 2013; and My Home Today, which aired on ANC in 2013.[12]

Rebranding

In 2012, MEGA Publishing Group rebranded to One MEGA Group Inc. in preparation for expanding the reach of its titles, being used across print, television, events and digital.

As part of OMGI’s expansion into multiple platforms, they launched documentary series Making MEGA in 2013.[13] The first Making MEGA was a fashion documentary featuring the making of MEGA Magazine’s September 2013 issue with Anne Curtis as the cover. The documentary, produced by Emmy Award-winning producer Michael Carandang, followed the MEGA Editorial Team as they shot Curtis’ cover in South America. To date, there are 14 Making MEGA documentaries that have featured artists such as Nadine Lustre and James Reid, Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, and Vice Ganda to name a few.[14][better source needed]

Death of founder

On September 9, 2019, OMGI founder Sari V. Yap died after battling cancer for years.[1] Condolences poured in as soon as the news broke, with personalities like Anne Curtis, TV host and model Bianca Gonzalez, and socialite Tim Yap paying tribute to the fallen media company founder.[15]

Before passing away, Yap appointed Archie Carrasco as the second president and CEO of One MEGA Group Inc.[16][better source needed]

2020–2021

Carrasco’s leadership started out with a challenge as the COVID-19 pandemic hit at the beginning of 2020. Though impacted by the pandemic lockdowns, OMGI continued operations, refreshing its existing media brands and launching new media brands in response to the new normal.

OMGI launched OneMEGA.com, a business and lifestyle website which unified and featured thought leaders and industry experts in one digital platform.[17]

On July 17, 2020, OMGI launched Modern Parenting with the goal of being inclusive across all types of parents, going beyond the traditional family setup.[18]

In early September 2020, MEGA Magazine revealed its visual revamp and a new logo through posts on its official Instagram account.[19]

As Carrasco established the investment holdings company AGC Power Holdings Corp. (AGC PHC), One MEGA Group Inc. became one of its subsidiaries. He took on the role of chairman and CEO of One MEGA Group Inc. In April 2021, he appointed then-Assistant Vice President for Creatives & Production Suki Salvador to be OMGI’s new president.[20] Salvador stepped down a year later as he was appointed president of the new AGC PHC subsidiary handling international titles, MEGA Global Licensing Inc.[21] Carrasco stepped back in as OMGI’s president.

OMGI celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2021 with a logo redesign, changing its symbol to a dandelion to represent clarity and ease in facing the future.

2022-Present

In February 2022, OMGI’s first title, MEGA Magazine, celebrated its 30th anniversary by releasing three covers[22]. The cover artists featured Cherie Gil,[23] Nadine Lustre,[24] and celebrity doctor Vicky Belo and Hayden Kho’s daughter, Scarlet Snow Belo.[25] All proceeds of the magazine were donated to the victims of Typhoon Odette.[22]

In October 2022. OMGI announced the launch of its sports lifestyle website, The Game.

In December 2022, OMGI launched The Business Manual, the Philippines’ first online subscription-based business platform.
