Mapei S.p.A. (Italian pronunciation: [maˈpɛi]) is a multinational Italian group and is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of chemical products for the building industry, with sites located in all five continents and a consolidated turnover in 2022 of 4 billion Euros.
Thanks to the company’s vocation for innovation and constant research work it proposes quality, durable solutions that take into consideration the wellbeing of people and the planet in pursuit of increasingly sustainable buildings and structures.
Company history[edit]
In 1937 Rodolfo Squinzi founded Mapei Materiali Ausiliari per l’Edilizia e l’Industria (Auxiliary Materials For Building and Industry) in Milan, where the company’s head-office is still located. Initially the company focused on the production of paints and then later started producing adhesives and materials for the installation of resilient floor and wall coverings and ceramic tiles.
Giorgio Squinzi, an industrial chemist and son of Rodolfo Squinzi, joined the company and played a key role in the growth and success of Mapei. Thanks to his input, the product portfolio grew and the first phase of the company’s process of internationalisation commenced with the opening in 1978 of its first facility in Canada in the city of Laval.
In 1984 Giorgio Squinzi became Sole Administrator of Mapei. His innate intuition, along with the support of his lawyer sister, Laura, who took over the company’s legal and corporate issues and shared his corporate vision and investments strategy, marked a new chapter in the growth of the company, taking it to an international dimension.
Another important contribution came from Adriana Spazzoli, Mapei Marketing and Communication Director until 2019, who oversaw all Communications and Marketing activities and turned the brand into a household name all around the world, thanks also to numerous sports sponsorships.
In 2019 his children, Veronica and Marco, who had already been working in the company since the second half of the 1990’s, became joint CEOs and took over the day-to-day running of the Group. Members of the Mapei Board also include Laura Squinzi as Chairperson and Simona Giorgetta.
In line with the growth strategy which has always been an integral part of the history of Mapei, Marco and Veronica Squinzi guided the company through a new phase, extending the product portfolio and expanding the Group all around the world.
Business activities[edit]
Mapei is present on the building market with a complete portfolio of more than 25 product lines to meet every need and requirement for the world of construction: from the installation of ceramic tiles to resilient materials, from concrete admixtures to thermal and acoustic insulation systems, from structural strengthening solutions to recovery systems, right up to products for more niche markets such as grinding aids for cement works, systems for tunnelling and road and underground construction work, and solutions for the marine industry.
Thanks to the high quality of its products and on-site technical support and consultancy service, particularly appreciated by designers and professionals alike, Mapei is partner in thousands of projects around the world, from large infrastructures to iconic buildings.
An important driver behind the growth of Mapei is Research & Development, to which the Group dedicates a great deal of effort in terms of investments and resources. The Corporate Research Centre in Milan coordinates the work of more than 30 R&D laboratories located around the world and acts as a Central Analysis Laboratory. All the centres are equipped with cutting-edge instruments and equipment and work in constant collaboration with Universities and scientific and industrial research centres around the world.
Over the years Mapei has played an important part in the construction of the most important works of architecture and infrastructures at a global level. In Italy, the many projects it has worked on include the construction of the San Giorgio Bridge in Genoa, restoration work on the La Scala Opera House in Milan and the MIND – Milan Innovation District project.
Around the world, the company has taken part in work on the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the iconic Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi. It has also worked on the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumper, the futuristic Jewel Changi Airport in Shang Hai, the Panama Canal, the most ambitious feat of engineering in the world, and the Riyadh Metro in Saudi Arabia, considered to be the largest public transport system in the world.
Social commitment[edit]
Mapei sponsors numerous associations, institutions and events and considers its support of culture and sport an expression of the company’s commitment to people and the territory.
Fully aware of the significance that culture represents for the foundations and identity of a community, Mapei has always been committed to providing concrete support to the most important institutions by being involved in projects for the construction or renovation of centres of art around the world - such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Aquilonare Sacristy in Milan Duomo Cathedral and the San Carlo Theatre in Naples – which, at times, has also led to joint ventures and continuous, ongoing support.
Since 2008 Mapei has been a Permanent Founding Member of the La Scala Opera House in Milan and, from 2016 to 2019, Giorgio Squinzi was a member of the Board of Directors.
Since 2016 the company has been collaborating with the Veneranda Fabbrica conservation institution at Milan Cathedral and is a subscriber to the “Adopt a Spire” and the “Adopt a Statue” initiatives.
Amongst the numerous organisations it supports, the company works alongside the Peggy Guggenheim Collection as a subscriber to the Guggenheim Intrapresae Project.
Through its commitment to sport at both professional and amateur level, particularly football and cycling, Mapei promotes the values that are part of its DNA, such as talent, teamwork, enthusiasm, determination and perseverance when facing new challenges.
Its first venture into the world of sport was back in 1993 with the sponsorship of a professional cycling team, which for many years headed all international rankings and achieved a total of 654 victories.
This experience led to the Mapei brand becoming recognised all around the world, thanks also to the visual impact made by the team, which became known by everyone as the “Team of Cubes” due to the particular logo on the riders’ shorts and jerseys. A small, colourful revolution in the clothing used for this sport.
Sponsorship of the cycling team came to an end in 2002, but Mapei continues to be close to the sport by sponsoring a number of international events. In fact, since 2008, the Group has been Main Partner of the Union Cycliste Internationale for the Road World Championships.
Since 2003 the company has been owner of U.S. Sassuolo Calcio, the local football team of the city regarded as a symbol of the ceramic district. To support the club’s activities, in 2013 Mapei bought the stadium in Reggio Emilia and renamed it the Mapei Stadium, an example of sports stadiums on the national and international scene, and in 2019 inaugurated the Centro Sportivo Mapei Football Center, one of the most modern sports centres in Europe.
Mapei group also supports Centro Ricerche Mapei Sport, created in 1996 to assist athletes from the Mapei professional cycling team through a scientifically coherent approach. The Centre carries out scientific research and provides assistance to athletes of all levels with the aim of improving their performance through personalised training programmes and biomechanical assessment.
