Summary[edit]

Media data and Non-free use rationale
Description In 1972, following the televised beating of her gay son, Jeanne Manford and her husband marched in a NYC Pride Parade with a now-famous sign reading "Parents of Gays Unite in Support for Our Children". Many spectators, seeing the sign, approached Manford, which eventually lead to the creation of P-FLAG, the largest organization for parents and friends of gays and lesbians in the world. The sign itself has become a significant artifact, and is now in the collection of the New York Public Library. (src: http://www.nypl.org/locations/tid/36/node/138008)

Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) The combination of (1) the historical context in time (the parade, 1972), (2) the founder, and (3) the sign itself, which is now a historic artifact owned by the New York Public Library and used as an illustration to their HIV/AIDS-related collections uniquely tells the story of a defining moment in PFLAG's history.
Not replaceable with
free media because
(WP:NFCC#1)
In terms of providing historic context, it'd certainly be impossible to produce a new image that would replace it lacking a time machine, and given the fifty years of history, what few images might, just possibly remain (and an image clearly showing both the sign *and* the founder from that parade is enormously unlikely to begin with), are likely to be from the same source (the records of the founder in the NYPL archives) and enjoy the same restrictions as this image.
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) This is a web-resolution image, just large enough in resolution to clearly allow the reading of the sign, and making out of the founder's face.
Respect for
commercial opportunities

1. The owner is not a commercial organization.

2. The owner is not in the business of licensing of artwork. 3. The owner has indicated their consent for the image to be used on Wikipedia, and while I will ask them to verify this via ticket.
