John G. Iannarelli is an American cybersecurity expert, author, and former law enforcement officer. Iannarelli served as an FBI Special Agent for over two decades, during which he was a member of the FBI Cyber Division Executive staff and an Assistant Special Agent in Charge overseeing criminal, cyber, and counterintelligence investigations. He has been involved in high-profile cases such as the Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords shooting, the Oklahoma City Bombing, the Las Vegas Mandalay Bay shooting, and the 9/11 attack.[1].

Iannarelli is the recipient of the FBI Director’s Distinguished Service Award[2] and an Honorary Doctor of Computer Science for his contributions to cyber investigations. He is also an NSA Certified Speaking Professional (CSP)[3], a recognition for his expertise in safety and security topics[4]. Iannarelli is a frequent media contributor on topics of cybersecurity, national security, and law enforcement[5]. He is the founder of the JI Consulting Group, a speaking and consulting firm based in Scottsdale, Arizona.[6]

Early Life and Education[edit]

Iannarelli was born on April 10, 1963, in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. He attended Fair Lawn High School. In 1985, he graduated from Montclair State University with BA degree in Communications. In 1993, Iannarelli graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Diego School of Law, to include having attended and completed studies of criminal and civil international law at Magdalen College in Oxford, England.

Iannarelli is the youngest of four children of Anthony and Jean Iannarelli. His siblings are Susan Iannarelli, Anthony Iannarelli, and Janine Iannarelli.

Career[edit]

Iannarelli retired from the FBI after more than 20 years of service and now works as an international speaker and consultant. He is a subject matter expert on cybersecurity, active shooter awareness and terrorism prevention[7]. During his time with the FBI, he was a member of the FBI SWAT team and participated in the investigations of the Oklahoma City Bombing, the 9/11 attack, and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ shooting, and the Sony hack. Iannarelli retired from the FBI in 2015. In recognition of his contributions as an FBI Agent, Iannarelli received the FBI Director’s Distinguished Service Award and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Computer Science[8]. During his time with the FBI, Iannarelli received the FBI Director’s Distinguished Service Award. Prior to joining the FBI, Iannarelli served as a police officer with the San Diego Police Department.

In 2015, Iannarelli established the JI Consulting Group. In 2017, Iannarelli appeared on. multiple national news programs, including FOX, CNN, NBC, and NPR, providing providing law enforcement commentary on the October 1, 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting at Mandalay Bay[9][10][11].

Iannarelli has worked as a consultant in the entertainment industry on various films, including Peppermint, with actress Jennifer Garner, TV mini-series The Hot Zone, and Manhunt: Unabomber.

Iannarelli is a professional speaker and consultant known as "FBI John".[12] Iannarelli speaks and consults on cybersecurity, active shooter preparedness and response, terrorism prevention, leadership and ethics[13]. Speaking engagements include Arkansas Bankers Association[14], Arizona State University[15], Campus Safety Conference[16], and the FBI National Academy Associates[17].

He has worked with Fortune 500 companies, the United Nations and the Vatican as a cybersecurity expert[18]. He has contributed on active shooter preparedness for The Wall Street Journal[19] and was interviewed on cybersecurity for Forbes.[20]

Personal Life[edit]

Iannarelli is the father of Garrett Anthony Iannarelli, a former U.S. Army Infantry Soldier who served in Afghanistan and now a writer in Los Angeles, and Samantha Rae Iannarelli, who has several graduate Psychology degrees and works in counseling.
